Object and Summary of Class
This course provides students with basic knowledge on biochemistry, in particular structures and functions of biomolecules such as amino acids and proteins.
Goal of Study
The purpose of this course is to help students explain the following biochemistry topics:
· Cell structures and roles of water in biochemical phenomena
· Structures and functions of amino acids, peptides, and proteins
· Structures and functions of enzymes and enzyme kinetics
To understand diseases based on the functions of body as targets of drugs, it is necessary to know biochemical functions and structures of biological substances.
In this course, students will understand the structures and functions of carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and their related substances.
This course aims to improve students’ ability to handle biological materials including tissues, cells, and bacteria, in biochemical and molecular biological methods, to learn methodologies for analyzing physiology and pharmacology of organisms: i.e. students learn how to analyze structure of organs and tissues, how to measure enzymatic activities, and gene expression, and methods for protein purification, bacterial isolation, DNA amplification, and restriction enzyme mapping.

In this lecture, we will focus on the chemical aspects of life phenomena and promote understanding them from a micro perspective. Then, we will consider the formation of biological molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, sugars, and lipids, and what their changes are. There are a wide variety of substances that make up living organisms, and their changes are very complex. However, the lecture is not just a matter of explaining and memorizing phenomena, but to be able to respond to the "why" of things. The lecture will be planned to understand "metabolism/biochemistry" with actual examples.
