Based on an understanding of the developmental process of the education system in Japan and other countries, we will identify issues in contemporary education from a legal and institutional perspective of the education system.
現代社会において教育についてモノ申すことは、すなわち教育制度についてモノ申すに等しい。社会的に営まれている今日の教育は、さまざまな制度によって枠づけられ、支えられているからである。教育改革が教育制度改革として構想され、実施されるのもそのためである。したがって、教育について、単なる不平不満や願望の吐露ではなく、意味のあるレベルでモノ申すためには、教育制度に関する知識、識見が必要不可欠である。本授業はそうした知識、識見の習得を目的とし、教育に関する諸制度についての講義及び討議を行う。／
It is essential to understand that when we speak about education, we essentially talk about the educational system. This is because today's education is operated socially and depends on various systems for support. Educational reform is therefore planned and implemented as a reform of the educational system itself. Engaging in meaningful discussions about education is crucial to have knowledge and insight into the education system rather than just expressing desires or complaints. This class aims to provide students with such knowledge and understanding. The class will cover lectures and discussions on various systems related to education.

現代人にとって、学校で学ぶことはあまりに当たり前の行為と化している。しかし、一人の教師が教壇に立ち、多数の学生に対して講義を行うことは、日本ではせいぜい明治時代になってから一般化した教育スタイルに過ぎない。また、学生個々の達成度を測るため、学期末に行われる試験も、前近代の日本社会では決して一般的ではなかった。本授業では、受講生たちに教育社会史の論文を精読させ、学校で学ぶという行為の意味を深く考察してもらう。
For modern people, learning at school has become a completely normal activity. However, having one teacher stand at the podium and give lectures to a large number of students is only an educational style that became common in Japan during the Meiji period. Additionally, exams held at the end of each semester to measure each student's level of achievement were by no means common in pre-modern Japanese society. In this course, students will be asked to carefully read papers on the social history of education and deeply consider the meaning of the learning at school.
