This course explores the history of the period from the end of the Second World War to the present in Japan through an examination of 13 important moments. Including disasters, new engagements with the world, political and economic shifts, and other notable events, this class will provide an overview of the postwar from a new perspective, highlighting the lines of both continuity and discontinuity that underlie postwar society and politics, as well as the regional and global connections that have defined Japan's place in the postwar world order.

2022年2月に始まったロシアによるウクライナ侵略は、約2年経過した現在も終息の兆しは見えない。ロシアは国連安保理常任理事国の一国として国際社会で軍事的、政治的に重要な役割を果たしている。今日のロシアを深く理解するためには、その過去を理解する必要がある。20世紀初頭から現在に至る100年余りの歴史、3つの国家が入れ替わった歴史を概観することが本授業の目的である。日露戦争で幕を開けた20世紀初めのロシア帝国時代、1917年のロシア革命による帝国の崩壊、帝国を引き継ぐ新しい社会主義国家ソ連の誕生、レーニンやスターリンによる国家改造、独ソ戦争後の米国と並ぶ超大国としての出現と東西冷戦、ゴルバチョフによるペレストロイカとソ連の崩壊、新生ロシアの誕生とプーチンの長期政権という大きな流れをたどる。
Even though almost two years have passed since Russia invaded Ukraine, the war shows no signs of coming to an end. Russia (the Russian Federation), a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is a country with important military and political roles in the international community. To better understand Russia today, however, one has to understand the nation's past. This course aims to provide an overview of the history of Russia over the past 100 years, including the history of its three States -- Russia, the Soviet Union, and the Russian Federation. This lecture includes topics as follows. The Russo-Japanese War, World War Ⅰ, Russian Revolution of 1917 and the collapse of Russian Empire, the birth of the Soviet Union and reorganization of statehood in the socialist principles by Lenin, Stalin, the emergence of Great Power after the Great Patriotic War, the Cold War, Perestroika by Gorbachev and the demise of Soviet Union, Putin’s long-term reign in the twenty-first century etc.
Kazuo Ishiguro is the acclaimed Japanese-born and British-based author who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017. The Remains of the Day (1989) is one of his most famous novels (and later adapted into a popular movie), which describes the life and love of a butler serving an English aristocrat in the 1930s, and how he reacts to the coming of the Second World War. In this course we will study Ishiguro’s novel as both an example of contemporary English fiction about social class, and as a way to think about the memory of the World War in British Postwar culture. Students will read a part of the novel each week and in the class we will discuss relevant topics. Students should learn about the style of modern fiction, techniques for reading, and improve subject knowledge about twentieth-century culture.
カズオ・イシグロは、2017年にノーベル文学賞を受賞した、日本生まれで英国在住の高名な作家である。日の名残り』（1989年）は彼の最も有名な小説の一つで（後に映画化され人気を博した）、1930年代の英国貴族に仕える執事の人生と愛、そして第二次世界大戦の到来に対する彼の反応を描いている。 このコースでは、社会階級を扱った現代イギリス小説の一例として、また戦後イギリス文化における世界大戦の記憶について考える方法として、イシグロの小説を学ぶ。受講生は毎週小説の一部を読み、クラスでは関連するトピックについて議論する。現代小説のスタイルや読解のテクニックを学び、20世紀文化に関する知識を深める。
近現代日本とアジアの関係は、世界の中での日本の位置や抱えていた課題を示すものであった。本講義では、その関係を通して見える日本国内の政治経済構造の特質や、国際政治上の位置について考察することを目指す。具体的には、「大東亜共栄圏」と言われた戦時期の経済ブロック構想の内実とその実態について、それ以前・以後の歴史もふまえて考察する。

This lecture aims to understand the characteristics of Japan's domestic political and economic structure and its position in international politics that can be seen through this relationship. Specifically, lectures will be given on the realities of the wartime economic bloc concept called the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, based on the historical background.

本講義では、定期刊行物、新聞などの分析を通した近現代中国史研究の分析方法論などについて考えていきます。そこで、本講義では近現代中国におけるイスラームとムスリムを題材として扱います。まず近現代中国と中国イスラームについて概観していきます。そのうえで、定期刊行物や雑誌を用いた中国ムスリム研究の事例を紹介していきます。その際に、具体的なトピックについての資料の講読・演習や討論などをまじえながら、具体的な課題の検討を試みます。
This course will discuss analytical methods for studying modern and contemporary Chinese history through the analysis of periodicals and newspapers. Therefore, this course will focus on Islam and Muslims in modern and contemporary China. First, we will provide an overview of modern and contemporary China and Chinese Islam. We will then present examples of Chinese Muslim studies using periodicals and journals. Throughout, we will attempt to examine specific issues through readings, exercises, and discussion of materials on specific topics.
