日本語の文法変化の具体的事例として機能語（助詞）の確立過程を取り上げ、言語の変化と多様性およびそれを支える構造について考える。日本語の、音韻、形態、統語・意味的な側面が相互に関連しながら変化していく様相を観察し、個々の形態の変化を条件付けたり制約として作用したりする語彙的意味や構造的特性と、変化をもたらす言語運用上の諸条件の関係について考察する。言語変化の把握や記述・分析法の一例を提示するとともに、さまざまな立場を批判的に検討し、言語の変化や多様性にかかわる諸現象を分析する手法を身につける。
The main aims of this course are to explore properties of syntax and syntactic change in the history of Japanese. Some aspects of morphology, semantics and pragmatics are also included where relevant. We will survey selected changes and discuss different accounts, that will also introduce various approaches to syntactic change.This course deals with the factual linguistic knowledge and the specialized knowledge on historical development of Japanese functional morphemes. It also help students acquire the skills and proficiency needed for historical study on Japanese grammar.
言語はおよそ文という単位をもち、語という単位をもつ。その文や語のもつ構造やその構成の規則を考えていくのが文法論である。ここでは、その文法論について、文法論はなぜそのように考えるのか、その結果、どのような帰結が導かれるのかということを考えていく。対象とする言語は現代日本語を中心とする。
A language is composed of sentences and words. Grammatical theory considers the structure of sentences and words and the rules of their composition. In this class, we will discuss the theory of grammar, why the theory of grammar thinks the way it does, and what results are derived from it. The target language is mainly modern Japanese.

言語の歴史は古い文献を探ればわかるように思えるが、文献だけが言語の歴史を知る資料になるわけではない。また、古い文献を探ることにもさまざまな問題がある。そこで、ここでは、日本語の具体的な例を見ながら、言語の歴史（日本語の歴史）を探る方法について考える。同時に、古代語から現代語まで変化してきた日本語の歴史の概要を把握したうえで、日本語の歴史をとらえるための視点について解説する。
Although it would seem that the history of a language can be found by exploring old literature, literature is not the only source for the history of a language. There are also various problems in exploring old literature. Therefore, here we will consider how to explore the history of a language (the history of the Japanese language) by looking at specific examples of the Japanese language. At the same time, after grasping an overview of the history of the Japanese language as it has changed from ancient to modern languages, we will explain the perspectives from which the history of the Japanese language can be captured.

言語にとって意味というものは欠かすことのできない側面であるが、それをとらえるのは思いのほかむずかしい。そこで、ここでは語の意味にしぼって、それがどのようなものであるのかを検討する。検討にあたっては、現代日本語の類義語をとりあげ、具体的な例文にもとづき類義語の差異を分析し、また、議論しながら、語の意味について考えていくことにする。
In this course, we will examine the meanings of words. We will take up synonyms in modern Japanese, analyze the differences between synonyms based on concrete example sentences, and consider the meaning of words through discussion.
