Course Title (授業題目)

Introduction to phonology I

授業の目的と概要

この授業を通して、英語と日本語の母語話者が示す分節現象で観察される規則に焦点を当て、音声が、言語（文法）構造を構成している単位としてどのように機能しているかを学ぶ。

Course Objectives and Course Synopsis(授業の目的と概要)

In this course, students will study how speech sounds function as units of linguistic (grammatical) structure, focusing on segmental patterns in native-speaker spoken English and Japanese.

学習の到達目標

この授業を通して、諸言語話者の (i)母語の音体系，(ii) 音現象を制御する規則，(iii)文法理論における音韻知識の位置づけ、を説明できるようになる。

Learning Goals(学習の到達目標)

After completing this course, students will be able to explain (i) what language speakers know about their native sound system, (ii) some of the rules controlling sound patterns in a particular language, and (iii) where phonological knowledge belongs in a general theory of grammar.

毎回授業の冒頭で、前回の授業内容を復習する.

Class 6: The phonemic principle
Class 7: Phonemes and allophones
Class 8: Complementary and contrastive distribution
Class 9: Allophonic rules
Class 10: Phonotactics
Class 11: Phonological categories
Class 12: Vowel features
Class 13: vowel reduction
Class 14: Consonant features
Class 15: Consonant lenition

At the beginning of each class, the contents of the previous class are reviewed.

成績評価方法

レポート課題×2 (60%)，確認テスト×1 (40%)

授業時間外学習

毎回、授業で扱った教科書の個所と例を復習すること。そして不明な部分があれば、教員に尋ねること。
