Life science is a discipline which explore the mechanism of a life phenomenon of human, animals and plants by the various levels such as the genes, the cells, the individuals and the groups. In agricultural life science, life phenomenon of a crop and livestock are studied using various technique, and subjected to make them contribute to human prosperity. This course provides explanations about the structure and function of the cell which is the base unit of all organisms, and about the structural feature of the molecules of which a cell is composed, e.g. nucleic acid, protein, fat, and glucide.

In this lecture, we will focus on the chemical aspects of life phenomena and promote understanding them from a micro perspective. Then, we will consider the formation of biological molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, sugars, and lipids, and what their changes are. There are a wide variety of substances that make up living organisms, and their changes are very complex. However, the lecture is not just a matter of explaining and memorizing phenomena, but to be able to respond to the "why" of things. The lecture will be planned to understand "metabolism/biochemistry" with actual examples.
There are basic mechanisms that are shared by diverse organisms on the earth. We aim to understand the fundamental functions of the molecules and cells that constitute life. We want to free you from the assumption of "mystery of life" and guide you to another "mystery" that is realized by "complexity based on simple principles".
For the investigation of various biological processes, the basic concepts of chemistry based on structures and properties of molecules are extremely effective. In this lecture, we chose topics related to four subjects, nucleic acids, sugars, proteins and proteins in cells, and discuss the historical developments and current subjects of the investigations related to the topics. This lecture will be given by the following four lectures affiliated to Institute of Multidisciplinary Researches for Advanced Materials, Prof. Takehiko Wada (nucleic acids), Prof. Fumi Nagatsugi (sugars), Prof. Satoshi Takahashi (proteins) and Prof. Tasuku Hamaguchi (proteins in cells). This lecture will be given in Japanese.
