This course is intended for international students who have passed the N2 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). This course introduces students to the Japanese language and culture through the lens of food. Students will learn about the history, culture, and significance of food in Japan. They will also explore the relationship between food and social issues, such as globalization, nationalism, and inequality.

本と子どもが好きな学生と留学生に適した国際共修クラスである。さまざまな文化背景をもつクラスメートと本について対話をし、自己の理解、他者の理解を深め、国際教養を身に付けるとともに、本をテーマにした現代的課題を見つけだす。さらに、日本やさまざまな国の子どもたちに対する多言語ブックトークイベントの企画と実施を通して、異文化での協働力、問題解決力、創造力、コミュニケーション力を身に付けることを目的とする。留学生は東北大学日本語コースのレベル４（日本語能力試験Ｎ３合格レベル、中級前半修了程度）以上であれば、登録可。課外活動も行われる。
This course is designed for both domestic and international students who like books and children. The aims of this course is to promote 1) students' understanding of both themselves and others, 2) acquisition of international liberal arts, and 3) finding contemporary issues on the theme of books, thorough
discussions with classmates who have different cultural backgrounds. In addition, planning and holding book-related events for children in the world enable students to acquire collaborative, problem-solving, creativity, and communication skills. International students: International students can registrate this course if you are at level 4 of the Tohoku University Japanese Language Course (Japanese Language Proficiency Test N3 pass level, completion of the first half of the intermediate level) Extracurricular activities will be also required.

Students will gain a multifaceted understanding of Japanese culture through exchanging opinions on Japanese language usage and communication styles with international students while explore the ways to promote smooth multicultural communication.

/Using Japanese songs as source materials, international and Japanese students will think about the Japanese language and culture, exchange their impressions and opinions, write essays, sing songs together, and make group presentations of the songs they choose. Students will study the characteristics of Japanese culture and points of commonality with the international students' home countries/regions while learning about diversity in values and world-views. In this class students will develop an understanding of intercultural communication studies and through group work, group discussion and workshops recognize the complications and difficulties that arise in communication. Theatrical workshops by Rengyo sensei (professional writer, director, actor) and other guest speakers, and tasks of creating performances and discussions with classmates will be given in the class, and you will gain real experiences in intercultural communication, considering ways to resolve problems. During the spring/summer (1st) semester students will focus on problems in intercultural relationships that can be compared with our own personal networks. At the end of the class this will be demonstrated in performances. In the process of creating a performance students will think comprehensively about skills for communication.
この授業では、異文化コミュニケーション研究の基本的概念を理解し、授業中のワークショップやグループワークを通して、コミュニケーションの複雑さ・難しさへの認識を深める。そのため、受講生同士のディスカッションや、蓮行講師（脚本家・演出家・俳優）およびゲスト講師による演劇ワークショップを行う。そして最終的に、パフォーマンス創作課題が与えられ、その中で受講生同士の異文化コミュニケーションを実際に体験する。前期では、特に異文化間対人関係の問題について学び、自身の人的ネットワークの現状と比較する。最終的にはパフォーマンスの発表を行う過程で、相手に自分の考えが伝わるコミュニケーションをデザインする実践力も身につける。
