    English is a key skill in engineering, academia, and business in today's interconnected world. This course aims to give you the skills needed to participate in today's world. We will combine natural native-speaker learning methods with methods based on scientific research. The objective of this course is for students to gain skills in effective English communication in a global environment with the focus on engineering. There will be lots of speaking (in pairs and in groups). You will learn some technical vocabulary useful for engineering, and how to structure your ideas and present your projects (group presentations), You will learn some grammar, but it is not the focus. By the end of this course students should have a better understanding of global English as used for academic/engineering purpose; students will be able to communicate across cultures more effectively and naturally; will be better able to participate with confidence in discussions; will be able to use and understand measurements and specifications particular to engineering; will be able to explain and understand graphs and diagrams; will be able to summarize and discuss key ideas; will be able to express opinions and ideas, and; will be able to plan and give presentations.

    English has become an essential tool of success for engineers, and is increasingly important. In this class, we learn about a number of interesting topics in the media using real materials. We use online content (video, etc.) to practice listening and reading as homework, and in class we do a lot of speaking. This course will introduce some fundamentals of academic and technical writing There will be grammar and vocabulary that is applicable to both TOEIC and engineering communication (but TOEIC is not a focus of the course). We spend time on structured writing and speaking, including group presentations and team projects. This course is about improving your ability and confidence to use English in modern interconnected world, and you will learn some effective reading, writing, and speaking methods to do so.

    The aim of this course is to develop language, debate, and communication skills that are sufficient to present and discuss research results related to doctoral dissertation research at international conferences. This training includes actual research presentations and question-and-answer sessions. In addition, group discussions will be held with the aim to prepare the presentation materials necessary for attending international conferences.

    Students will learn about general science and society topics in English with Japanese support when needed.

    Examples of topics that will be studied and discussed in class include the following:

    Introducing basic concepts within the sciences

    Science and technology in modern times

    Artificial Intelligence in Society

    Science and the environment

    Ethics in science

    Impact of scientific innovation

    Topics will be general enough for non-science students to understand. The course is based on the framework of CLIL, and students will be encouraged to think critically, offer opinions, and get involved in discussions within an active learning classroom. Students will learn about scientific content in English and simultaneously improve both their English language skills and content knowledge. Lessons will be scaffolded to ensure that students have the right vocabulary and grammar to achieve each lesson's objective. This course will be of interest to students who wish to improve their English while learning about topics in the sciences.

    科学と工学の分野における重要な概念を探求しながら、言語能力を高める。そのために、内容言語統合学習(CLIL)を取り入れた授業を行う。授業は日本語によるサポートを受けながら英語で行われ、科学的知識の習得とともにアカデミックな英語力とプレゼンテーション能力を伸ばす機会を提供する。また、理工系の教授を招く回も設ける。

    内容および語学力について、各々の目的は次の通りである。

    内容の習得: 科学と工学の基本概念を理解し、批判的思考と分析力を養う。

    語学力の向上: 科学的な語彙やアカデミックな表現に重点を置きながら、英語運用能力(listening, speaking, reading, writing)を向上させる。優れたアカデミック・ライティングの基礎を学び、理工学分野で興味のあるトピックについてプレゼンテーションを行う。

    This Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) course in Science and Engineering is designed to enhance students' language proficiency while exploring key concepts in the fields of science and engineering. The course is conducted in English with Japanese language support and provides students with the opportunity to develop their academic English language and presentation skills in conjunction with acquiring scientific knowledge.

    Some of the classes will also include a guest science or engineering professor.

    Content Mastery: Gain an understanding of some fundamental concepts in science and engineering, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills. 

    Language Proficiency: Develop and improve student’s English language skills, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on scientific vocabulary and academic language. In this course, students will also learn the fundamentals of good academic writing and give a presentation on a topic within science and engineering that interests them.

    Essential for good scientific English skills is mastery of scientific vocabulary and grammar. Students will learn to dissect scientific vocabulary into prefix, stem and suffix. Also, they will learn to use the correct article, prepositions, and conjunctions.

    This knowledge will be used to describe one or two simple experiments that will be performed by the students.

    There will be ample time for active oral participation in question/answer rounds.
