Objective.
Discrete mathematics is becoming increasingly important as a basic theory for understanding information technology. In this class, you will learn the basic concepts and methodologies of discrete mathematics.
Overview.
Students learn the fundamentals of discrete mathematics with a focus on set theory, combinatorics, and graph theory. Students learn the methodology and ways to prove problems through many concrete application examples as well as supplementary materials including many exercises.
Goal.
The goal of this course is to acquire the following skills:
- To be able to understand problems in discrete mathematics expressed using abstract concepts such as set theory and relations, and to be able to prove theorems and properties.
- To understand basic solutions of difference equations.
- To be able to understand various problems in graph theory, and to be able to prove theorems and properties of graphs.

From this point of view, the objective of this course is to acquire mathematical logic as a basic knowledge of information science.
# Overview
Students will learn basic concepts in propositional logic and predicate logic, including formalization of propositions and
predicates, their models, proof theory, and soundness and completeness.
# Goals
- Ability to formalize propositions in natural language as logic formulae.
- Understanding of formal inference.
- Knowledge of formal proofs and the ability to make formal proofs.
- Ability to determine the validly of a proposition in a variety of theories.
- Understanding of the provability, validity and their equivalence.

The Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdos used to talk about “The Book,” in which God keeps the most beautiful proofs for mathematical theorems. Erdos’ highest praise, upon learning from someone a new proof of a theorem, was “That’s one from the book.” In this seminar we will survey a collection of elegant results and proofs in mathematics, ranging in topic from number theory to geometry to combinatorics and graph theory, and including some of Erdos’ favorite results. We will also discuss some of the history of the results and the mathematicians involved. A main text for the seminar will be “Proofs from the Book,” by Aigner and Ziegler. Students will give presentation.
