外国語教育における実証研究は、研究デザインから分析結果の報告に至るまで科学的な手法に沿って行われます。そして実証研究論文では、実験方法、実験参加者、実験手続きなどの詳細を研究結果とともに詳しく報告する必要があります。この授業では、外国語教員を目指す学生だけではなく言語学分野における実証研究を行うことを予定している学生を対象に、実証研究を行う上での基本的な知識を習得した上で、研究デザインの作成、データの分析、結果の報告のし方を学びます。
Empirical research in foreign language education follows scientific methods, from research design to data collection, to reporting the results of the analysis. When producing an empirical research paper, the researcher should elaborate the rationale, the methodology including instrumentation, sampling, data collection, and data analysis. In this course, students who plan to conduct empirical research in the field of linguistics as well as students aiming to become foreign language teachers will learn how to design the research, analyze data, and report the results after acquiring basic knowledge for conducting empirical research.

数値によるデータ分析は、人文社会科学を含めた多くの学問分野で基本的な研究手法の一つです。しかし、たとえば人間の生について、すべてを数値に置き換えることはできません。複雑な背景をもつ個人や社会を大づかみにとらえる際に単純化・抽象化の作業は有効ですが、複雑なものを複雑なままに受け止めることが必要な場合もあります。ライフストーリーもしくはライフヒストリー研究などの質的研究は、数量データとしばしば対置される「物語（ナラティブ）」に主眼をおくもので、量的研究としばしば対比されます。生きられた物語（身の上話、生活史）だけでなく、虚構の物語もまた、私たちの生活において大きなリアリティを持っており、その具体性・個別性・細部こそが質的データであるといえる。とはいえ、数量データと物語とは、単にそれぞれの専門家が別々に取り組むのではなく、両方の手法のメリットと限界を知り、境界線上に立って複雑な社会を見つめる視野を持つことは重要だろう。この授業でははじめに、「エビデンス」をめぐる学界の動向、エビデンス主義への批判や質的研究の課題とされてこと等について講義する。続いて、生活史、戦争、環境問題など具体的なトピックについて、数量データと物語の可能性と限界を考察するため、文献講読を行う。
人文系の学生と理系の学生が共存する情報科学研究科の環境を生かし、ディスカッション形式で学ぶことにも重きをおく。
1.科学者として疑問を探求する姿勢を理解する。
2.看護学研究の意義と必要性を理解する。
3.目的に合わせた研究方法を選択し、実施するために必要な基本的能力を養う。
