When producing an empirical research paper, the researcher should elaborate the rationale, the methodology including instrumentation, sampling, data collection, and data analysis. In this course, students who plan to conduct empirical research in the field of linguistics as well as students aiming to become foreign language teachers will learn how to design the research, analyze data, and report the results after acquiring basic knowledge for conducting empirical research.

本科目では、実証的な言語研究を実際に体験するために、グループを組んで調査・実験の小プロジェクトを行います。研究テーマ・デザインの立案、調査・実験素材の準備、データ収集、分析、まとめと発表までの一連の作業を授業期間内に行います。期間内に実現できるよう教員が助言をしますが、基本的にはグループのメンバー同士の主体的な協同により、一つの研究成果をあげてもらいます。この作業を通して、実証的な言語研究の醍醐味に触れてもらうことを期待します。
This course will provide students teams with the opportunity of a collaborative project to conduct an experiment to experience an empirical study of language. Each project will include forming a research question, designing an experiment or survey, preparing materials and the program, collecting data, analyzing, interpreting the finding, and presenting it. Each student needs to cooperate with other team members to carry out independent research until the course completion under the supervision of the instructor. Students will be fascinated by the activity of empirical language study.

数値によるデータ分析は、人文社会科学を含めた多くの学問分野で基本的な研究手法の一つです。しかし、たとえば人間の生について、すべてを数値に置き換えることはできません。複雑な背景をもつ個人や社会を大づかみにとらえる際に単純化・抽象化の作業は有効ですが、複雑なものを複雑なままに受け止めることが必要な場合もあります。ライフストーリーもしくはライフヒストリー研究などの質的研究は、数量データとしばしば対置される「物語（ナラティブ）」に主眼をおくもので、量的研究としばしば対比されます。生きられた物語（身の上話、生活史）だけでなく、虚構の物語もまた、私たちの生活において大きなリアリティを持っており、その具体性・個別性・細部こそが質的データであるといえる。とはいえ、数量データと物語とは、単にそれぞれの専門家が別々に取り組むのではなく、両方の手法のメリットと限界を知り、境界線上に立って複雑な社会を見つめる視野を持つことは重要だろう。この授業でははじめに、「エビデンス」をめぐる学界の動向、エビデンス主義への批判や質的研究の課題とされてこと等について講義する。続いて、生活史、戦争、環境問題など具体的なトピックについて、数量データと物語の可能性と限界を考察するため、文献講読を行う。
人文系の学生と理系の学生が共存する情報科学研究科の環境を生かし、ディスカッション形式で学ぶことにも重きをおく。

3.目的に合わせた研究方法を選択し、実施するために必要な基本的能力を養う。

この授業は「ディスコース社会学」と呼びうる社会学的研究について論じるものである。ここでいう「ディスコース社会学」とは、質的調査の結果として得られたインタビュー・データや観察結果を用いて社会学的な研究を成り立たせるための方法と、その方法から得られる知見によって形作られるものである。調査を行ってデータを得たからといって、それを理論や命題に「当てはめる」ということでは、社会学的な研究は成り立たないし、そもそもそれが誤っていることもしばしばである。そこで、それらのデータを社会学的な視角から眺め、そのデータで観察される現象を社会学的に明らかにすることによって初めて、その対象を社会学的に記述することが出来る。そのさいに踏まえておくことが必要な言語に着目した「分析をめぐる基礎的な考え方」や、それをもとにした「具体的な分析方法」について論じるのが、この授業である。これは、社会学理論や社会学的命題の現れとして現実を考えるのではなく、むしろ現実から始めて社会学的思考を成り立たせるという、質的研究にとって中心的な作業ともいえるだろう。
This course discusses a sociological study that can be called "Discursive sociology". "Discourse sociology" refers both to the methods used to conduct sociological research using interview data and observations obtained as a result of qualitative research, and to the findings obtained from these methods. We often fit the data obtained through qualitative research into a theory or proposition. However it is not sociological research works and the insights obtained sometimes are fault. Therefore, we can only describe the subject sociologically by looking at the data from a sociological perspective and clarifying the phenomena observed in the data from a sociological perspective. In this class, we will discuss the "basic ideas of analysis" focusing on language and "specific methods of analysis" based on these ideas, which are necessary to be taken into account in this process. This is a central task for qualitative research, which does not consider reality as a manifestation of sociological theory or sociological propositions, but rather starts from reality to establish sociological thinking.
質的調査手法を実践的に理解し、社会調査の設計から結果の公表までの一連の過程を習得することを目的とする。
社会調査の基本知識・手法を学び、フィールドワーク（聞き取り調査、参与観察、資料収集など）をおこなう。調査データを整理し分析することを通じて、質的調査を遂行する能力を身につける。
The purpose of this course is to gain a practical understanding of qualitative research methods and to master the series of processes from social research design to publication of results. In this class, students learn the basic knowledge and methods of social research, conduct fieldwork (interviews, participant observation, data collection, etc.)
