This class is a continuation of the writing class in the previous semester, and is intended to help students develop the skills for writing research papers/essays in English. This course will therefore concentrate on the skills for writing longer research projects in the humanities such as dissertations by asking students to research two long written assignments during the semester. Each week, the class will review and practice an aspect of research writing from the pre-writing stage to final editing. By the end of the course, students should have developed a more sophisticated "voice" for writing in English for academic purposes.
この授業は、前学期に行われたライティングの授業の続編であり、英語で研究論文／エッセイを書くためのスキルを身につけることを目的としている。そのため、この授業では、学期中に2つの長文の課題研究を課すことで、学位論文のような人文科学におけるより長い研究プロジェクトを書くためのスキルに集中する。毎週、リサーチ・ライティングの1つの側面について、執筆前の段階から最終的な編集まで、復習と練習を行います。コース終了時には、アカデミックな目的のために英語で文章を書くための、より洗練された「声」を身につけることができるはずです。
In this class, students will learn how to write an academic essay in continuous English prose of at least five paragraphs. Each week, we will review a stage of the writing process from preparing a topic and thesis statement to organizing and editing paragraphs. In the first half of the semester, students will write a five-paragraph essay, and in the second half we will look at the correct use of sources, in academic work, avoiding plagiarism and using types of citation. By the end of the course, students should produce a second essay on an academic topic of their own choice with citation and documentation.
Please note that this class will be limited to 35 students. It will also be offered in the second semester.
このクラスでは、アカデミック・エッセイの書き方を学びます。毎週、トピックや論文の準備から段落の構成、編集に至るまで、執筆プロセスの各段階を確認します。学期前半では、5段落のエッセイを書き、後半では、アカデミックな仕事における出典の正しい使い方、剽窃の回避、引用の種類について学びます。コース終了時には、各自が選択した学術的なトピックについて、引用と文書化を伴った2本目のエッセイを作成する必要があります。

This course is intended to help graduate students develop the skills necessary for successfully writing academic assignments in English. Over the course of the semester, students will review and practice the necessary stages for preparing, drafting and editing academic work by writing two essays. Classes each week will review specific skills and strategies for the writing assignment, such as brainstorming, outlining, revising, and practicing sentence styles. The course will also include citation skills using MLA Style and, if required, APA Style.
このコースは、大学院生がアカデミックな課題を英語でうまく書くために必要なスキルを身につけることを目的としている。学期中、学生は2本のエッセイを書くことで、学術論文の準備、草稿作成、編集に必要な段階を確認し、練習する。各週の授業では、ブレーンストーミング、アウトライン作成、推敲、文体の練習など、ライティング課題に必要な特定のスキルやストラテジーを確認する。また、MLAスタイル、必要であればAPAスタイルを用いた引用のスキルも学びます。

本授業科目では，前期開講の「学問論」で学んだ初級アカデミック・ライティングに関する知識・技能を前提に，学生自身が選択したテーマについて文献に基づく3論構成のレポートを作成します．授業の前半で，受講生はテーマを選び深めるための文献講読に並行して，文理双方の学術論文の実際に触れ，図書館やインターネットを活用した文献探索の技術を身につけます．後半は，自分で選定したテーマに関して，序論・本論・結論を備えたレポートを作成します．この授業では担当者の4名がそれぞれ，学生のレポートに対し採点・コメントし，修正期間を経たのちに再評価するなどきめ細かな指導を行うため，履修登録者の上限は20名程度とします．学部・学年を問わず，アカデミック・ライティングの力を高めたい学生諸君の挑戦を期待しています．

In this course, you will write a literature-based report on the self-selected theme, based on the knowledge and experience of academic writing that you learned in the "Introduction to Academic Learning" in the first semester.
After reading the literature to select and deepen the theme of writing, you will write a report on the theme that you have selected in the Introduction- Body-Conclusion format. We look forward to the challenge of students who want to improve their academic writing skills, regardless of their faculty or grade.

目的・概要
技術者や研究者は、自分たちの技術や研究の価値を国際的に発信し、世界の技術や研究の動向を追う能力が必要である。発信力を育成するには、論理的に構成された文章を書くことが求められる。これは、日本語／英語に共通する重要な能力であり、3年生以降に各学科で実施される研修や4年生で取り組む卒業研究の際に必要な基礎力である。
本講義では、論理的に構成された文章とはどのようなものかを良い文章例を分析することで学び、様々な分野の日本語／英語の素材を読み解いて要約作成や意見記述などの文章を実際に書いて推敲する演習を行う。
達成目標
・文章の構成、各パラグラフや各センテンスの役割と順序を理解し、実践できる。
・長い文章などの素材を400～800字の論理構成された文章に要約できる。
・250～400 wordsの英語の文章を無理なく書ける。

Abstract
Engineers and researchers need the ability to disseminate the value of their technology and research internationally, and to follow the trends of technology and research around the world. To develop communication skills, it is necessary to write logically structured articles. This is an important skill that is common to Japanese and English, and is a basic skill required for training in each department from the third year onwards and for graduation research in the fourth year.
In this lecture, we will learn what constitutes a logically structured article by analyzing good examples of writing, and we will practice summarizing and writing opinions by deciphering Japanese/English materials from various fields.
Objectives
・Students should be able to understand and practice sentence structure and the role and order of each paragraph and sentence.
・Sstudents should be able to summarize the contents of long articles into logically structured sentences of 400-800 words.
・Students should be able to write sentences of 250-400 words in English without difficulty.
日本語能力試験N1合格レベルの留学生を対象とする。
大学での学習、研究や学生生活において必要とされる様々なタイプの文章を書く力を、実践的な課題を通して身につける。
Eligibility: B2 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N1 in the JLPT). Through practical assignments, students will comprehensively develop various writing skills necessary to university studies, research, and student life.
In this class we will read the short novel Cranford (1853) by Elizabeth Gaskell. This is a comic description of life in small town in Victorian England yet is also shows us a lot about changing ideas and contexts of 19th century Britain (the Victorian period). Therefore, during the class we will study the many aspects of Victorian culture and society that are mentioned in the novel: the role of women and men; the English class system; the railways and the industrial revolution; the countryside and the city; the impact of the British Empire and globalization.
この授業では、エリザベス・ガスケルの短編小説『クランフォード』（1853年）を読みます。この小説は、ヴィクトリア朝イギリスの小さな町の生活をコミカルに描いたものですが、19世紀イギリス（ヴィクトリア朝時代）の考え方や背景の変化についても多くのことを教えてくれます。そこで授業では、この小説に登場するヴィクトリア朝の文化や社会の様々な側面、つまり女性と男性の役割、イギリスの階級制度、鉄道と産業革命、田舎と都会、大英帝国の影響とグローバリゼーションについて学ぶ。
This course will consider the period of the “Postwar” in British Literature (1945-2000s). We will read a selection of short stories and study them in the literary, historical and cultural context of literature after World War Two. Topics for study will include: the style of the short story; social class and change in post-war Britain; gender and identity; science, technology and the environment; understanding literary history and periodization of the modern. Students should improve skills for reading fiction in English and understanding comparative modern culture.

This course is designed to provide students with a foundation for writing in English in academic and professional settings. They will learn grammar, style, citation of sources, etc., required for term papers, research papers, theses, and dissertations. In addition to refining their writing skills, they will also acquire general knowledge of the structure and content as well as ethical issues involved in academic writing. This course is designed for students whose native language is not English and is taught primarily in Japanese.
