数値によるデータ分析は、人文社会科学を含めた多くの学問分野で基本的な研究手法の一つです。しかし、たとえば人間の生について、すべてを数値に置き換えることはできません。複雑な背景をもつ個人や社会を大づかみにとらえる際に単純化・抽象化の作業は有効ですが、複雑なものを複雑なままに受け止めることが必要な場合もあります。ライフストーリーもしくはライフヒストリー研究などの質的研究は、数量データとしばしば対置される「物語（ナラティブ）」に主眼をおくもので、量的研究としばしば対比されます。生きられた物語（身の上話、生活史）だけでなく、虚構の物語もまた、私たちの生活において大きなリアリティを持っており、その具体性・個別性・細部こそが質的データであるといえる。とはいえ、数量データと物語とは、単にそれぞれの専門家が別々に取り組むのではなく、両方の手法のメリットと限界を知り、境界線上に立って複雑な社会を見つめる視野を持つことは重要だろう。この授業でははじめに、「エビデンス」をめぐる学界の動向、エビデンス主義への批判や質的研究の課題とされてこと等について講義する。続いて、生活史、戦争、環境問題など具体的なトピックについて、数量データと物語の可能性と限界を考察するため、文献講読を行う。
人文系の学生と理系の学生が共存する情報科学研究科の環境を生かし、ディスカッション形式で学ぶことにも重きをおく。
外国語教育における実証研究は、研究デザインから分析結果の報告に至るまで科学的な手法に沿って行われます。そして実証研究論文では、実験方法、実験参加者、実験手続きなどの詳細を研究結果とともに詳しく報告する必要があります。この授業では、外国語教員を目指す学生だけではなく言語学分野における実証研究を行うことを予定している学生を対象に、実証研究を行う上での基本的な知識を習得した上で、研究デザインの作成、データの分析、結果の報告のし方を学びます。
Empirical research in foreign language education follows scientific methods, from research design to data collection, to reporting the results of the analysis. When producing an empirical research paper, the researcher should elaborate the rationale, the methodology including instrumentation, sampling, data collection, and data analysis. In this course, students who plan to conduct empirical research in the field of linguistics as well as students aiming to become foreign language teachers will learn how to design the research, analyze data, and report the results after acquiring basic knowledge for conducting empirical research.

微生物から植物、動物に至る多種多様な生物でゲノム塩基配列が解読され、得られた塩基配列とアミノ酸配列の情報は広く一般に利用できるようにウェブサイト上で公開されている。新しいバイオテクノロジー産業を創出するうえで、これらの配列情報を有効に活用できることが極めて重要である。この講義では、配列情報を解析するための計算機プログラムの原理と限界についての基礎的な概念を説明し、実際の計算機プログラム（ウェブで提供されているサービスも含む）を用いた配列情報の解析、タンパク質構造の解析および次世代シークエンサ―により得られる膨大なデータの解析についの実用性について解説する。

運動学分野における研究は、身体活動・運動・スポーツなどのさまざまな未解決な疑問に科学的根拠で答えることにある。さらに得られた結果が科学的根拠としてどのように科学・社会にとって価値があるかを明確に位置づけることは研究を行うものにとって不可欠である。本授業においてはこの領域のエビデンスを理解するための科学的根拠の構造と構築のプロセスを理解することを目的とする。運動学で扱う領域は、分子細胞生物学・動物・個体の生理学、集団を対象とする疫学的手法など多階層に及ぶため、学生の関心領域をピックアップし研究方法の概要を解説する。
This class focuses on understanding of fundamental structure of scientific approach to exercise and sports science. How to find a research question, how to make a hypothesis, appropriate study design to examine hypothesis, why statistical evaluation is necessary, and interpretation of analyzed results, are topics to be covered. Since exercise science involves multimodal approaches from molecules to population, outlines of methodological approach will only briefly be introduced.
