We will select and read works, such as novels, essays, and poetry, written in Japanese by Japanese author and translated in English . In class, students will discuss works of "Japanese literature" in the broad sense. In doing so, students will explore the significance of writing in Japanese, as well as what is written there and how.
室生犀星の王朝小説を原典の古典作品と読み比べることで、古典文学の世界を近代小説の翻案を通して学ぶ。授業の進め方としては、各回に指定されている犀星の王朝小説と原典となっている古典作品をあらかじめ精読し、教室では読書会形式をとることで、鑑賞を交えた批評を自由に述べてディスカッションしていく。教員はモデレーター役を務めるが、受講生全員が意見を述べ応答し合うインタラクティブな場を作り、継続的なテーマを発見していくことを目指す。
Students will learn the world of classical literature through adaptations of modern novels by reading and comparing Murou Saisei's dynasty novel with the classic works of the original text. As for how to proceed with the class, carefully read Saisei's dynasty novel designated for each lesson and the classic works that are the original texts in advance, and take the form of a reading party in the classroom to freely state and discuss criticisms including appreciation. The faculty will act as a moderator, but the aim is to create an interactive place where all the students can express their opinions and respond to each other, and discover continuous themes.
本演習は、明治期から近年にいたる多様な小説について、〈生き物〉の表象（特に動植物に関する文学的表現）という観点を軸に、多様な社会的・文化的なコンテクストを視野に入れて分析を行うことを目的とする。
受講者は、担当する作品についての分析の結果を資料に基づいて発表する。発表内容を踏まえた全体での討論をとおして、小説の精緻な読解を試みる。
The purpose of this exercise is to analyze various novels from the Meiji period to recent years from the viewpoint of the representation of "living things" (especially the literary representation of animals and plants) with a view to various social and cultural contexts.
Students present the results of their analysis of literary works. We try to read the novel in detail through the discussion based on the presentation.
アダプテーションとは、もとにある作品を異なる形に移し替えて新たな作品を作ることを指す。日本におけるアダプテーションの歴史は古く、現代に至るまで盛んに行われている。この授業では、日本におけるアダプテーションの歴史を踏まえたうえで、主に近世後期から近現代におけるアダプテーション作品を取り上げて受講生の興味関心に従い論じる。作品の分析を通して日本文化の特性を学ぶとともに、その作品が生まれたそれぞれの時代背景について理解することを目的とする。
Adaptation refers to the process of creating a new work by transferring the original work into a different form. Adaptation in Japan has a long history and has been actively practiced up to the present day. In this class, based on the history of adaptation in Japan, we will discuss adaptation works mainly from the late modern period to the modern period according to the interests of the students. Through the analysis of these works, students will learn about the characteristics of Japanese culture and gain an understanding of the historical backgrounds in which these works were created.
ルイス・キャロルの『不思議の国のアリス』と『鏡の国のアリス』を原書で読解します。これらの作品は子供でも読めるやさしい英語で書かれていますが、じつは多様なネタが仕込まれています。それらの面白さや笑いのツボを味わうように丁寧に作品を読み進めてゆきます。また、文学テクストを批評的に分析する技法も学びます。授業では毎回担当者を決めて発表してもらい、その発表を起点に全員でディスカッションをします。
Close reading of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland & Alice through the Lookin-Glass. These works are written in easy English that even children can understand, but there are various kinds of mysterious and laughing materials. We read closely the texts in order to appreciate the unique taste of these works. In each class, three students make report on the contents of the text and we make discussion based on the report.
かつて多くの学生は、教養的な習慣としてシェイクスピアやドストエフスキーの作品を読んでいました。偉大な文学作品は、いわゆる人間科学以上に「人間とは何か」を教えてくれるからです。しかしもちろん、文学作品は単に教科書として読むべきものではなく、楽しむためのものです。この授業は文学「研究」の入門ではありません。古典的な西洋文学の作品を読んだことのない人に、最初の一歩を踏み出してもらうためのものです。一歩踏み込んでみれば、結構面白いものが見つかり、何かしらの教養も得られるでしょう。文学史の概略に関する導入的な講義とあわせて、重要な４つの作品に焦点をあてます。学生はそれらを実際に（翻訳で）読み、４回レポートを書かなくてはなりません。そのレポートに基づく学生どうしのディスカッションにも参加しなければなりません。作品に関連する映像の鑑賞も行う予定です。もしあなたに「何百年も前に書かれた文学作品を読んだらどんな感じがするのだろう」という好奇心があれば、この授業は多少意義のあるものになるでしょう。／Long ago, reading Shakespeare and Dostoevsky's masterpieces was a cultural habit of many students. For great literature teaches us what it means to be human, no less than so-called human sciences. But of course, literary works should not be read as textbooks, but for enjoyment.This course is not an introduction to literary "research". It is intended as a first step for those who have never read classical works of Western literature. If they take a small step in, they will surely find something interesting and feel somehow educated. Along with an introductory lecture on an overview of literary history, we will focus on four important works. Students have to actually read them (in translation) and write a short report four times. Students must also participate in discussions based on their reports.We also have a time to see the film version of works. If you have a curiosity about what it would be like to read a literary work written hundreds of years ago, this class may be of some benefit.
John Milton (1608-1674) is one of the most influential, and controversial, poets in the English language, whose work has influenced many famous world of English and Literature, and continues to provoke readers today. This course will read a selection of his major poetical works, including his early lyric poetry collected in Poems (1645), and excerpts from his masterpiece, the epic poem, Paradise Lost (1667). We will study the literary and historical background of the seventeenth century, including his use of literary genres, the influence of religious belief on his work, and ideas of cultural and political conflict during his lifetime , and also consider some of the historical reception of his work.

英文学のジャンルの中でも詩は馴染みがうすいかもしれません。しかし、詩を読解することによって言葉そのものがもつ不思議さと大きな力を知り、英語という言葉の奥深さに触れることができます。この授業では、ルネサンスから20世紀に書かれたイギリスの詩の中から、とても有名で比較的短いものを選んで読解してゆきます。詩はジャンルや約束事が分からないと理解できない作品が多いので、そうした事項を説明しながら詩のテクストを読解してゆきます。詩は読者から近づいて行かないと何も答えてくれませんが、直接詩の原文に触れて積極的に問いかけてゆけば詩はいろいろなことを答えてくれるはずです。
This lecture covers English poetry from the Renaissance to the 20th century, focusing on famous poems in these periods. Because poetry is usually written based on literary tradition and conventions, this lecture pays attention to the knowledge of literary genres and conventions. Generally speaking, poems don't seem to talk to you if you don't approach to poems for yourself, but if you ask questions to poems, they will surely give you rewarding answers.

明治時代から第二次世界大戦中に至るまでの多様な小説を取り上げ、文化的・社会的な文脈を視野に入れて具体的に分析するとともに、テクスト分析の方法や、日本近現代文学の形成過程などについて概説を行う。
毎回の授業の終わりに、授業内容について考えたことや質問を提出してもらう。次回の授業で、その回答や補足説明も行いながら授業を進める。
In this lecture, we will analyze a variety of literary works from the Meiji era to the Showa era, with a view to their cultural and social contexts.
