Introduction to Academic Learning (IAL) is a compulsory course for first-year students of all faculties. Rather than a lecture that unilaterally discusses 'what is AL,' this course encourages students to discover the answer for themselves. Specifically, this course focuses on the aspect of AL that ‘begins with intellectual curiosity leading to studying and questioning,' allowing students to recognize their own intellectual curiosities, place them in the context of academia and society, and plan their academic journey at the university. Through this course, students are encouraged to smoothly transit from high school to university, and to concretize early on the outlook of their studies and life at Tohoku University.
The goal of the course is for students to acquire the basic academic qualities required in the undergraduate programs, regardless of their faculty. These basic qualities include: 1. Independently pursuing intellectual curiosity and cultivating a consciousness to connect it with society, 2. Concretizing the prospects of study and research at Tohoku University, and 3. Acquiring the skills necessary to collaboratively advance study and research.

科学技術に支えられた社会を支える一員として、そして工学に携わる技術者として守るべき義務や責任について考える。工学の世界から生み出された様々な技術や製品は，私たち現代人の生活に無くてはならないものであると同時に，場合によっては多くの人に危害を及ぼすものにもなり得る。

この授業では、主に以下のような能力を修得することを目標とする。

1. Object and Overview of the Class
The students should consider the duties and responsibilities observed as members of a society supported by science and technology and as engineers involved in engineering.
The various technologies and products provided by engineering are indispensable to our society, and at the same time, in some cases, they can cause harm to many people.
The students will learn how to be ethical when you are asked to make decisions in various situations, and acquire the necessary graoundings to make ethical value judgments.
2. Goals of Study
The main objectives are to acquire the following abilities.
(1) To have the ethics necessary to be an engineer when pioneering new science and technology.
(2) To understand the values that engineers should share and be able to conduct responsible research activities.
(3) To understand that science and technology have both positive and negative aspects, and to have ability to make ethical decisions.
(4) To have the willing to seek their own "well-being" and the development of society as a member of the engineering professionals in the 21st century.
本科目では，持続可能な社会構築にあたっての課題について，理学，工学，医学，人文・社会科学及びこれら多用な学問分野の融合領域の観点から解説し，世界的規模で生じている気候変動及び変容・複合化する災害に対応するレジリエントな社会を如何にデザインしていくべきかを論じる． / In this course, we will discuss challenges related to the construction of a sustainable society from the perspectives of natural sciences, engineering, medicine, humanities, social sciences, and the interdisciplinary fusion of these fields. The focus will be on addressing global-scale climate change and the evolving, complex nature of disasters. The course will explore how to design a resilient society capable of responding to climate change and increasingly complex disasters on a worldwide scale.

The purpose of this course is to learn Chinese pronunciation, greetings, and simple daily conversation.
This course will be conducted through blended learning (hereinafter referred to as BL), which combines on-demand and face-to-face classes. Through this method, students will learn pronunciation, introductory-level vocabulary and grammar efficiently, and acquire communicative competence in greetings and first meeting conversation.
