経済史学は、異なる地域の経済発展過程を比較する視点を内包している。アダム・スミスやF・ブローデル、D・ノースといった著名な学者らは、優れた比較経済史の論者としても知られている。比較の視点は、後発工業国の経済発展の分析や、先進国間の歴史的な違いを探究する際にも、その効果を発揮する。例えば、どの国でも都市は最も進んだ経済活動の中心地であるが、都市化の過程は国によって異なっている。そのため、都市の比較史を通じて、経済を支える固有の制度や社会的価値観を明らかにすることが可能になる。本講義では、こうした比較史の利点を最大限活用し、長期の西欧経済史について概説を行う。受講者は、自国の経済との類似点・相違点についての理解を深め、社会的な質の観点から経済力を相対的に評価する能力を身に付けることが期待される。
本講義では、偏った経済学的思考に陥らない"pluralist economics"の精神を尊重しつつ、欧米と同じ自由市場経済体制下にある日本経済の行く末を見据える上で欠かせない基礎的知識の習得を目指す。

Approximately 100 years behind the developed country of Britain, the late-industrializing country of Japan also experienced its first industrial revolution in Asia, thereby joining the ranks of developed countries by the early 20th century. In addition to the ‘first industrialized country’ in the region, there are striking similarities in the economic histories of Britain and Japan. For instance, just as the Japanese economy prospered from cultural exchanges with Western countries, the British economy was also supported by its interactions with Asian countries. The point at which the economy improved during the run-up to the industrial revolution can also be said to be a common feature between the two countries.
The purpose of finding similarities in the different economies is ultimately to highlight their ‘differences’. According to the latest research, it has become clear that a typical example separating the history of the two countries lies in the process of urbanisation leading to a modern economy. Towns and cities serve as vibrant economic hubs that laid the groundwork for contemporary society. The disparities in their development hint at a potentially insurmountable divide between the fundamental political and social values bolstering seemingly identical advanced economies. This lecture series will delve into an examination of the significant historical differences between the two leading economies, respectively representing the West and the East.

１．目的：将来の土木構造物のあり方を考える基礎的教養として，土木技術や土木構造物は何を目指し，どの様に発展してきたのか，そして，それを創ったエンジニアはどの様に生きたか．その経緯と歴史的背景を通じ，土木構造物の現在と，技術者倫理を踏まえた目標とすべき技術者像に示唆を与える．
２．概要：土木技術や土木構造物の発展過程を様々な事例を元に，社会的背景や技術的背景と，それをなしえた技術者像とを追う．前半は世界土木史，後半は日本土木史を中心に講義する．また，後半は技術・思想・技術者を中心に倫理も含め解説する．

1. Objective:
As a basic education to consider the future of civil engineering structures, what are the goals of civil engineering technology and civil engineering structures, how have they developed, and how did the engineers who created them live? Through the history and historical background of civil engineering, the present state of civil engineering structures and the image of engineers that we should aim for based on engineering ethics will be suggested.
2. Outline:
This book traces the development process of civil engineering technology and civil engineering structures based on various case studies, the social and technological backgrounds, and the image of engineers who were able to achieve them. The first half of the lecture focuses on the history of world civil engineering, and the second half on the history of Japanese civil engineering. The second half of the lecture will focus on technology, thought, and engineers, including ethics.
3.Goal of study:
In this course, students will acquire the following skills.
To develop insight into modern civil engineering technologies and design concepts through the history of civil engineering.
To understand the historical development process of civil engineering, and to develop the ability to understand the value of historical civil engineering structures.

1.Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to learn the basic concepts of design and to cultivate the ability to think in an integrated manner. This course also aims to cultivate the ability to work cooperatively with others and to make presentations.
2.Outline:
After a lecture on the basic knowledge and ideas of design, students are divided into small groups, and each group selects a simple design problem from among bridges, rivers, and cities, and formulates a design plan and makes a model.
3.Goal of study:
In this class, students are expected to acquire the following skills.
-To be able to make a basic design that takes into account the surrounding environment and landscape.
-The student will be able to envision the multiple demands on the design and the complex relationships among the design elements, and will be able to take an integrated view that brings them together into a single form.

This lecture aims to understand the history of Japanese architecture from various viewpoints.
The primary goal of this lecture is to review Japanese architecture from Ancient Times to the Modern age from various viewpoints such as design, technique, idea, and social background based on a cultural relation with East Asia.

Objective.
Space is a fundamental concept in architecture, yet it is important and difficult to understand because it has no "form". This course will help students understand the fundamentals necessary for architects by delving into several aspects of human cognition, concept, action, and manipulation from multiple perspectives.
Outline
The first half of the class will be an overview of the mechanisms of human spatial cognition and the current state of the science. Then, in the second half of the class, we will give specific explanations about the relationship with actions and culture, using examples of actual spaces. In the second half of the class, we will go out into the field to learn how space behaves and understand how to manipulate it.
Objectives
(1) To acquire knowledge about the framework for understanding the highly abstract concept of space in relative terms.
2) To understand the actual aspects of space and learn how to plan for them.
授業担当者が行っている、中世日本国の東西周縁部の比較研究の一端について講義する。前半は、主として東北地方と南九州における歴史認識や正統観念について講ずる。後半は、主として東北地方の歴史資料について論ずる。授業を通して、日本中世の国家構造について理解を深めるとともに、歴史研究の具体的方法について理解する。
This lecture will cover some aspects of the class instructor's comparative research on the eastern and western peripheries of medieval Japan. The first half of the lecture will focus mainly on historical perceptions and notions of legitimacy in the Tōhoku region and Southern Kyushu. The second half will focus mainly on historical materials of the Tōhoku region. Through the course, students will deepen their understanding of the structure of the Japanese medieval state and the specific methods of historical research.
