【Purpose】 We need to extract usable energy from the natural world in order to live and produce. On the other hand, the nature is complex and uncertain and cannot be controlled by human beings. In this lecture, we will learn the difficulty and interest of using the nature as a target of technological development, and learn design methodologies for sustainable energy extraction from the nature, focusing on geothermal energy as the main subject. The course also aims to understand the current technologies to utilize natural energy and to explore the ideal relationship between nature, technology, and society.
【Goal】
The course aims to provide students with an understanding of the following
- To be able to use methods for modeling complex systems and evaluating complex systems based on limited data.
- To develop an eye/sense to see natural products as objects of design.
- To be able to broaden one's perspective and develop one's own ideas about technology in society and technology facing natural resources.
- To be able to identify issues related to natural energy and to be able to consider solutions. (Be able to formulate hypotheses.)
This course aims at clarifying various phenomena in natural and social sciences through mathematical approaches and understanding the mathematical structures behind them. Wide varieties of mathematical approaches such as topology, differential equations, numerical simulations, are shown in this course with examples.

Importance of chemistry hidden in the modern societies and the industrial technologies is understood on the basis of recognition of the social problems in the field of environment, energy, material, food, medical, and so on.
Summary: Major global problems that human beings are now faced are various such as global warming, acid rain, ozone layer, air pollution, water problem, energy, material, food, medical and so on. The objective of the class is to understand the causes of the global problems from chewmistry point of view and to consider how to give the solutions.
Achievment: To understand chemistry hidden behind the global problems and to explain the reason why the problem happens in view of atomic and molecular level.
The purpose of this subject is to acquire basic knowledge about various issues related with the social sustainability, such as energy and resources. Faculty members of graduate school of environmental studies give lectures including the latest topics in omnibus style.
Science and technology are essential in maintaining the sustainability of energy resources. Among the various types of energy, there are few opportunities to learn about nuclear energy. In this lecture, we will focus on nuclear energy, whose application ranges from power generation to radiotherapy, and we will discuss its relationship with science and technology to deepen understanding of the energy, resource, and sustainability of the present society.
