This course provides the advanced topics of the finite element analyses for designing materials and structures. The technical and theoretical aspects of the nonlinear finite element method (FEM) are introduced to apply the recent technology of finite elements to the optimal design problems. In particular, the lectures focus on approximation properties of finite elements, solution methods for contact problems, implicit/explicit solution schemes and constitutive modeling for nonlinear elastic and inelastic materials.

In this course, students will be introduced to a different approach for understanding the chemical bonds and electronic
states of molecules and solids based on quantum theory. First, the axioms of quantum theory will be explained. Then approximation methods based on perturbation theory and variational methods will be introduced. Students will learn how chemical bonds and electronic states of actual matter can be interpreted within the framework of theoretical methods. This course covers potentials used in describing perturbation and trial functions often applied with the variational method in actual quantum chemical calculations for elucidation of quantum phenomena in chemistry.
Jacobi elliptic functions were introduced by Jacobi in 1829.
Although it has a history of about 200 years, it is not covered in high schools or even universities, so it can be said that there are almost no opportunities to learn about it these days.
On the other hand, in recent years there has been an active movement to use Jacobi's elliptic functions in the study of ordinary differential equations.
Therefore, in this intensive lecture, we will clarify properties of Jacobi's elliptic functions from the basics and explain how to apply them to differential equations.
Computer simulations are essential research tools in theoretical astrophysics today. In this class, students will learn theories and methods of numerical simulations including hydrodynamics, gravitational N-body simulations and radiation transfer, and apply them for some practical problems.
