Students will be introduced to works on Japanese history written in English, will gain an understanding of the issues, methods, and vocabulary used in them, and will translate them into Japanese.
本授業では英語圏のファンダムかつメディア研究者の著書を読解し、現代のポピュラー･カルチャーにおける大きな傾向（消費の特徴や生産者と消費者の関係や文化産業の有様等）について学ぶ。また、英語版と日本語版の比較を行い、翻訳の方法や（研究成果を纏める）一般読者向けの英文の書き方を解説する。

This course aims to help the students develop their language skills and acquire a better understanding of contemporary popular culture through comparative reading of English texts and their Japanese translations. The reading list consists of general audience publications by English-speaking literary and media scholars; these seminal books introduce trends in the global popular culture, including changing consumption patterns of the audiences as well as strategies and policies adopted by various media and entertainment industries. They also offer some fascinating case studies of transmedia adaptations (ubiquitous in Japan and overseas). Comparative reading will allow students to expand their vocabulary, get acquainted with common translation techniques and patterns, and get used to reading Anglophone publications. For English-speaking students, it is an opportunity to improve their skills in reading and translating Japanese texts.

アダプテーションとは、もとにある作品を異なる形に移し替えて新たな作品を作ることを指す。日本におけるアダプテーションの歴史は古く、現代に至るまで盛んに行われている。この授業では、日本におけるアダプテーションの歴史を踏まえたうえで、主に近世後期から近現代におけるアダプテーション作品を取り上げて受講生の興味関心に従い論じる。作品の分析を通して日本文化の特性を学ぶとともに、その作品が生まれたそれぞれの時代背景について理解することを目的とする。
Adaptation refers to the process of creating a new work by transferring the original work into a different form. Adaptation in Japan has a long history and has been actively practiced up to the present day. In this class, based on the history of adaptation in Japan, we will discuss adaptation works mainly from the late modern period to the modern period according to the interests of the students. Through the analysis of these works, students will learn about the characteristics of Japanese culture and gain an understanding of the historical backgrounds in which these works were created.
本講義では、「人物」を通して、日本史の概要や特色を学ぶことを目的とする。「人物」をとりあげることによって、ある人物の判断が歴史を動かす場面を目の当たりにしたり、市井の人物の人生が、歴史の変動によって翻弄される場面を目撃することになる。人が歴史をつくり、歴史によって人がつくられる点を現代の私たちが実感しつつ、あわせて「人物」から歴史を学ぶことの意義も考えたい。

本講義は、「都市」を通して、日本史の概要と特色を明らかにすることにある。「都市」とは一般に、人や物、情報が行き交う結節点であり、農村とは異なる景観をもつと考えられる。このような「都市」がなくては、そもそも国家が成り立たないことから、「都市」を考えることとは、国家や政治を考えることでもある。また、「都市」に暮らす人々の生き生きとした様子から、差別や自由といった歴史の深層を探り当てることもできる。このように、多面的な魅力を持つ「都市」ではあるが、そもそも「都市」とは何かを問うこと自体、研究史上の論点でもあった。これらの点をふまえつつ、具体的な歴史資料を通して、歴史的に「都市」を学ぶことの意義を論じていくこととする。
