Reading and Translation Fundamentals for Japanese History

授業の目的と概要

購読と英訳を通じて、日本語の歴史文献を読書・翻訳の基礎技術を学ぶ。

Using student reading and translation presentations, this class aims at providing basic skills and practice in reading and translating Japanese academic history writing.

The purpose of this class is to provide a basis in reading and translation for future work involving academic, particularly historical, works in Japanese.

教科書および参考書

各時間に適宜資料を配布する。
Readings will be distributed for each class.

授業時間外学習

各時間の前に適宜資料を読んで英訳する。
１回書いた英訳を提出する。
Students are expected to read and translate assigned sections for each class. All students will present their reading and translation in each class meeting. One polished translation is to be submitted for grading.

Class instruction will be largely in English, but the source material will be in Japanese, making proficiency in both languages necessary.
