Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous love stories in world literature. Its influence makes it one of the most popular plays by William Shakespeare. In this course, we will study the original English version of Shakespeare’s play and consider a number of aspects of renaissance English drama, world tragedy, ideas of romantic love, and the historical importance of the play for the invention of the modern idea of the teenager. We will study a part of the play together each week in class and watch a number of film versions of the play to see how it can be interpreted and performed. We will also consider some global adaptations of the play and its influence in Japan.

Kazuo Ishiguro is the acclaimed Japanese-born and British-based author who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017. The Remains of the Day (1989) is one of his most famous novels (and later adapted into a popular movie), which describes the life and love of a butler serving an English aristocrat in the 1930s, and how he reacts to the coming of the Second World War. In this course we will study Ishiguro’s novel as both an example of contemporary English fiction about social class, and as a way to think about the memory of the World War in British Postwar culture. Students will read a part of the novel each week and in the class we will discuss relevant topics. Students should learn about the style of modern fiction, techniques for reading, and improve subject knowledge about twentieth-century culture.

Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion (1914) is one of the most famous plays in early-twentieth-century English and Irish literature. The 1964 American film My Fair Lady is an adaptation of this play. In this course, we closely read the text to understand English culture and society, paying particular attention to the use of language and the process of communication. Another point of interest is how a historical shift around 1910. In each class, several students will be asked to translate and make a comment on the assigned part of the text.

Students will be required to do the 'close reading' of William Shakespeare, _Twelfth Night_. 'Close Reading' in this class means not only understanding Shakespeare's English correctly but also reading, for example, images, symbols, structures of the text. In each class, some of the students will be asked to translate and provide comments on the assigned part. Additionally, all students will be encouraged to actively participate in the discussion to enhance their understanding of the text. At the end of the term, students will be requred to write an essay on _Twelfth Night_.
John Milton (1608-1674) is one of the most influential, and controversial, poets in the English language, whose work has influenced many famous world of English and Literature, and continues to provoke readers today. This course will read a selection of his major poetical works, including his early lyric poetry collected in Poems (1645), and excerpts from his masterpiece, the epic poem, Paradise Lost (1667). We will study the literary and historical background of the seventeenth century, including his use of literary genres, the influence of religious belief on his work, and ideas of cultural and political conflict during his lifetime , and also consider some of the historical reception of his work.

本講義では19世紀後半のイギリスにおいて、産業化への抵抗として起こったアーツ・アンド・クラフツ運動と、大正から戦後にかけて日本で行われた民藝運動の比較研究を事例として、比較文化・比較思想の分野における基本的概念や研究手法を紹介する。特に、それぞれの運動の主導者であったウィリアム・モリスと柳宗悦の思想を比較し、両者の間の対話の可能性を探ることを通じて、多文化共生のための異文化理解の深化について考える。
In this lecture, we will introduce basic concepts and research methods in the field of comparative culture and philosophy through a case study comparing the Arts and Crafts Movement, which arose in late 19th-century Britain as a resistance to industrialization, and the Mingei Movement that took place in Japan from the Taisho period to the post-war era. In particular, by comparing the thoughts of William Morris and Yanagi Muneyoshi, who were leaders of their respective movements, we will explore the potential for dialogue between them. Through this exploration, we aim to deepen our understanding of intercultural understanding for multicultural coexistence.
This course will consider the period of the “Postwar” in British Literature (1945-2000s). We will read a selection of short stories and study them in the literary, historical and cultural context of literature after World War Two. Topics for study will include: the style of the short story; social class and change in post-war Britain; gender and identity; science, technology and the environment; understanding literary history and periodization of the modern. Students should improve skills for reading fiction in English and understanding comparative modern culture.

This course is intended to help graduate students develop the skills necessary for successfully writing academic assignments in English. Over the course of the semester, students will review and practice the necessary stages for preparing, drafting and editing academic work by writing two essays. Classes each week will review specific skills and strategies for the writing assignment, such as brainstorming, outlining, revising, and practicing sentence styles. The course will also include citation skills using MLA Style and, if required, APA Style.

This course is intended to introduce basic concepts and approaches for intercultural research by reviewing some important English keywords for researching for broad cultural studies in the humanities. By “cultural studies” we mean broadly any approach used in the School of Arts and Letters for studying forms of knowledge. Every week, the class will look at a particular word that describes a concept, object or topic of relevance and consider its implications and applications to undergraduate studies. To do so, students will be asked to read in advance each week a short text of some kind (usually in photocopy form or as an online source, and sometimes video material as well as writing) which will be explained in class by lecture and group discussion. By the end of the course, students will be asked to do some group work during class in the form of a class survey of a group presentation to each other on material arising from the course.
本講座は、人文科学における幅広い文化研究を行うための重要な英語キーワードを概観しながら、異文化間研究のための基本的な概念やアプローチを紹介することを目的としています。 ここでいう「カルチュラル・スタディーズ」とは、広く文学部で用いられる、知の形態を研究するためのあらゆるアプローチを意味します。このクラスでは毎週、関連性のある概念、対象、トピックを表す特定の単語を取り上げ、その意味合いと学部での研究への応用について考えます。そのために、受講生は毎週、何らかの短いテキスト（通常はコピーやオンライン資料、時には文章だけでなく映像資料も）を事前に読んでくるように指示され、授業では講義とグループ・ディスカッションによって説明される。コースの終わりには、授業中にグループワークをしてもらい、コースで学んだことについてクラスでアンケートをとり、グループで発表してもらいます。
