This course will consider the period of the “Postwar” in British Literature (1945-2000s). We will read a selection of short stories and study them in the literary, historical and cultural context of literature after World War Two. Topics for study will include: the style of the short story; social class and change in post-war Britain; gender and identity; science, technology and the environment; understanding literary history and periodization of the modern. Students should improve skills for reading fiction in English and understanding comparative modern culture.

Kazuo Ishiguro is the acclaimed Japanese-born and British-based author who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017. The Remains of the Day (1989) is one of his most famous novels (and later adapted into a popular movie), which describes the life and love of a butler serving an English aristocrat in the 1930s, and how he reacts to the coming of the Second World War. In this course we will study Ishiguro’s novel as both an example of contemporary English fiction about social class, and as a way to think about the memory of the World War in British Postwar culture. Students will read a part of the novel each week and in the class we will discuss relevant topics. Students should learn about the style of modern fiction, techniques for reading, and improve subject knowledge about twentieth-century culture.

In this class we will read the short novel Cranford (1853) by Elizabeth Gaskell. This is a comic description of life in small town in Victorian England yet is also shows us a lot about changing ideas and contexts of 19th century Britain (the Victorian period). Therefore, during the class we will study the many aspects of Victorian culture and society that are mentioned in the novel: the role of women and men; the English class system; the railways and the industrial revolution; the countryside and the city; the impact of the British Empire and globalization.

This course will read some examples of British novels and consider recent critical approaches to the contemporary novel and studies of fiction. The aim will be to help students consider the status of novels and contemporary fiction, and of how to better read narrative prose analytically. During the semester we will aim to read three representative short novels: Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1961), Kazuo Ishiguro’s When We Were Orphans (2000) and Deborah Levy’s Swimming Home (2012). Each novel explores the theme of childhood trauma, individual memory, and ideas of world history, yet also demonstrate different forms of fictional narration (roughly speaking, ‘the omniscient’, ‘the unreliable’ and ‘free indirect’). We will read the novels to introduce influential and current criticism of fiction, including ideas of psychoanalysis, rhetoric, aesthetics, and affect theory. By the end of the semester, students should know more about the post-war British novel how to read and write about fiction.

Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous love stories in world literature. Its influence makes it one of the most popular plays by William Shakespeare. In this course, we will study the original English version of Shakespeare’s play and consider a number of aspects of renaissance English drama, world tragedy, ideas of romantic love, and the historical importance of the play for the invention of the modern idea of the teenager. We will study a part of the play together each week in class and watch a number of film versions of the play to see how it can be interpreted and performed. We will also consider some global adaptations of the play and its influence in Japan.

ジェイン・オースティンに焦点を当てながら、18世紀～19世紀初頭におけるイギリス小説の展開を跡づけます。イギリスは近代的なリアリズム小説が比較的早い時期に成立しましたが、そのひとつの完成形がオースティンの小説です。その背景には政治的・社会的な要因が大きく作用しています。この授業では、そうした歴史的背景を説明しながら、オースティンと彼女に先立ついくつかの作家の作品を紹介してゆきます。同時に、小説の批評的な分析方法も紹介してゆきます。また、英語力を養うために、各作品の名場面を英語の原文で鑑賞します。
This lecture traces the history of English novel from the 18th- to 19th century, focusing on the works of Jane Austen. In Britain, modern realist novels developed relatively earlier than other European countries, and we find its fully developed form in Jane Austen. This course will read major works of Jane Austen and some of her predecessors, also paying attention to the method of analysis of literary works.
John Milton (1608-1674) is one of the most influential, and controversial, poets in the English language, whose work has influenced many famous world of English and Literature, and continues to provoke readers today. This course will read a selection of his major poetical works, including his early lyric poetry collected in Poems (1645), and excerpts from his masterpiece, the epic poem, Paradise Lost (1667). We will study the literary and historical background of the seventeenth century, including his use of literary genres, the influence of religious belief on his work, and ideas of cultural and political conflict during his lifetime , and also consider some of the historical reception of his work.

In this course, students will trace the generation and development of detective novels in Japan from the postwar period to the present day. Focusing on the role of detective novels in the process of reorganization of popular literature and pure literature, problems associated with the theorizing of detective novels, and mutual negotiations with other genres, students will examine the aspect of mystery as an emerging genre from various angles.

This lecture will examine various aspects of Japanese literature from the late 1940s to the 1960s, including the historical perspective of the Cold War period. The lecture will examine the diverse relationships between literature and the times through readings of texts by Dazai Osamu, Abe Kobo, Mishima Yukio, Oe Kenzaburo, Terayama Shuji, and others, taking into account their social and cultural contexts.
文学研究においても注目を集めている「情動 (Affect)」という視点から英国モダニズム文学を再考します。その議論において、言語芸術である文学と視覚芸術である絵画との差異と同一性が浮上してきます。このような観点から、新たな人文学の可能性を探究します。受講生が、文学研究に関して、これまでにない斬新な視野から議論をできるように訓練をします。この講義が準拠する情動理論は米国の理論家であるFredric Jamesonのリアリズム論ですが、この議論は文学テクストにおける「絵画的瞬間」に関して新たな解釈を可能にするものです。これを出発点にして、英国モダニズム期の美術批評家であるRoger Fryのいわゆる「ポスト印象主義（Post-Impressionism）」理論を再解釈しながら、同時代の作家たちであるVirginia Woolf、Katherine Mansfield、Joseph Conradなどのテクストを扱います。また、Sigmund Freudの精神分析にもこの文脈で言及します。情動をめぐるこれらの論点の背後には英国の心霊学研究（psychical research）あるいは金本位制などの歴史的文脈があり、それについても考察します。それと同時に、唯物論（materialism）に関するモダニズム的な意義についてもこの文脈で議論することになるでしょう。このように、本講義は、モダニズム芸術に関して、このような論点から新たな視点を獲得することを目的とします。
This course is designed to reexamine British modernist literature through the lens of 'affect,' a prominent theme in recent literary studies. This perspective aims to highlight the intriguing distinctions and similarities between literature as a verbal art and painting as a visual art. Students will be guided to explore modernist literature from this innovative viewpoint, encouraging discussions and analyses. The foundation of the course discussions will be Fredric Jameson's argument on realism, an American Marxist theorist. This framework allows for fresh and insightful interpretations of what can be termed 'painterly moments' within literary texts. Building upon this foundation, the course will reassess the concept of 'post-impressionism' proposed by British art critic Roger Fry. Simultaneously, students will delve into modernist works by Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, and Joseph Conrad. The exploration will also incorporate Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis. The course will shed light on British psychical research and the gold standard as historical contexts for the modernist intricacies of 'affect.' Simultaneously, it will contemplate the modernist significance of materialism within these historical contexts. Ultimately, the course aims to provide a novel historical perspective for reevaluating modernist art and literature.
