This course is designed to provide insight and analysis into the global context of universities in Japan and around the world. Universities and higher education play an essential role in contemporary knowledge-based societies. At the same time, the characteristics of contemporary universities are inextricably linked to their historical contexts, to issues of access and equity, and to mobility in terms of brain gain/drain and brain circulation. This course will cover the following topics: (1) historical origins and current trends in higher education, (2) access, diversity, equity, inclusion, and funding in higher education, (3) the knowledge economy and higher education, and (4) international dimensions of higher education. Across these themes, participants are expected to examine the role and value of universities in Japan and the world from interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. Doctoral-level studies on the nature of universities as academic and professional education and research with deep insight coupled with clear analysis are expected.

Universities and higher education play an essential role in contemporary knowledge-based societies. At the same time, the characteristics of contemporary universities are linked to their historical contexts, to issues of diversity, equity and inclusion, and to mobility in terms of brain gain/drain and brain circulation. This course will cover the following topics: (1) historical origins and current trends in higher education, (2) access, equity, and funding in higher education, (3) the knowledge economy and higher education, and (4) international dimensions of higher education. Across these topics, participants are expected to examine the role and value of universities in Japan and the world. This course provides a good opportunity to understand the international context of university life.

This course will examine the issues of Japanese universities and their students in the process of globalization, from a variety of perspectives ranging from the individual experience to the role of higher education in the larger Japanese society. Discussions based on relevant readings, lectures, and student presentations will be the platform for this course. In addition to classroom discussion, students will explore one of five selected issues of universities and their students in the globalizing and diversifying society as a group project. This course requires a certain level of English proficiency. TOEFL ITP 530 or higher is desirable.
本科目では、グローバル化の過程おける日本の大学と学生の問題を、個人の体験から、日本社会における高等教育の役割に至るまで、さまざまな観点から考察します。この科目は、関連する読書、講義、学生のプレゼンテーションに基づいたディスカッションを中心とした授業です。また、学生はグローバル化・多様化する社会における大学とその学生に関する5つの課題のうち1つを取り上げて、グループプロジェクトを行います。この授業はすべて英語で行います。ディスカッションを中心とした授業のため、一定の英語力（TOEFL ITP 530以上が望ましい）が必要です。
この授業では、日本の大学・高等教育機関で教員を目指す本学大学院学生が、現代日本の大学教育・高等教育で求められる基礎的知識を習得し、自分自身で授業を分析・設計・開発・実施・評価する自己省察力を身につけることを目的とする。

１．目的
交換留学のために必要なさまざまな情報を取得し、国際的な感覚を育む。
２．概要
交換留学するために必要となるGPA、TOEFL等のスコア、単位読み替え、奨学金等々に対する理解を深め、実りある交換留学を実現するための予備学習を進める。また、国際的な感覚を育むために、近隣諸国のパートナー校を訪問し、東北大学や工学部、マテリアル・開発系等に関する英語のプレゼンテーションを行う。

本学科の学習・教育目標のD、E、G、H、I、Jに関する能力を含めて修得する。
交換留学で海外の有名校で学び、自然科学に関する国際的な教養とセンスを養う。

2. Outline
To deepen students' understanding of GPA, TOEFL scores, credit transfer, scholarships, etc., necessary for studying abroad, and to promote preliminary study to realize a fruitful exchange program. In addition, to foster an international mindset, students will visit partner universities in neighboring countries and give presentations in English about Tohoku University, the School of Engineering, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, etc.
