Global Studies of Higher Education
This course is designed to provide insight and analysis into the global context of universities in Japan and around the world. Universities and higher education play an essential role in contemporary knowledge-based societies. At the same time, the characteristics of contemporary universities are inextricably linked to their historical contexts, to issues of access and equity, and to mobility in terms of brain gain/drain and brain circulation. This course will cover the following topics: (1) historical origins and current trends in higher education, (2) access, diversity, equity, inclusion, and funding in higher education, (3) the knowledge economy and higher education, and (4) international dimensions of higher education. Across these themes, participants are expected to examine the role and value of universities in Japan and the world from interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. Master level studies on the nature of universities as academic and professional education and research with deep insight coupled with clear analysis are expected.
このコースは、日本および世界の大学のグローバルな状況についての洞察と分析を提供することを目的としています。現代の知識基盤社会において、大学と高等教育は不可欠な役割を果たしています。同時に、現代の大学の特徴は、その歴史的背景、アクセスや公平性の問題、頭脳の獲得・流出や頭脳の循環といったモビリティと表裏一体の関係にあります。このコースでは、以下のトピックを取り上げます： (1)高等教育の歴史的起源と現在の傾向、(2)高等教育におけるアクセス、多様性、公正、包摂、財政、(3)知識経済と高等教育、(4)高等教育の国際的次元。これらのテーマを通して、参加者は学際的・横断的なアプローチから、日本および世界における大学の役割と価値を考察することが求められます。学術・専門教育・研究としての大学の在り方について、深い洞察と明確な分析を伴った修士レベルの研究が求められます。
Participants are expected to acquire master-level knowledge and research skills in international higher education that could help them pursue global careers as academics or high-level professionals. Students should acquire graduate-level competence in analysis and problem-solving through interdisciplinary approaches in universities and higher education. The course also provides international study experience as preparation for further study abroad and international collaborative research.
参加者は、国際的な高等教育に関する修士レベルの知識と研究能力を身につけ、学術的あるいは高度な専門家としてのグローバルなキャリアを追求することが期待されています。大学や高等教育における学際的なアプローチによる分析と問題解決のための大学院レベルの能力を身につけることが期待されます。また、留学や国際共同研究への準備として、国際的な学習経験を積むことができます。

In this course, we will use Classroom to deliver lecture materials and information.
This course includes instruction and discussion, as well as individual or group presentations (depending on the number of students). Students are expected to complete the reading assignments prior to class and to be prepared to express original comments and thoughts. They will also be asked to make presentations based on assigned topics.
このコースでは、授業とディスカッションのほか、個人またはグループによるプレゼンテーション（受講者の人数による）を行います。受講生は、授業前に課題文献を読了し、自分なりのコメントや考えを述べる準備をすることが求められます。また、与えられたトピックに基づいてプレゼンテーションを行うことも求められます。

Assessment will be made as follows:
In-class contribution 30%, presentation 30%, final report 40%
評価は以下のように行われます。
授業内貢献度30％、プレゼンテーション30％、期末レポート40％。
Students are expected to do research and reading before class and to express original comments and thoughts in class. They will also be required to make presentations based on assigned topics. The hours required for this independent study will be nearly equal to the hours required for class attendance. Active discussion is strongly encouraged throughout the course. Thus, the hours for independent study will include time for preparation and rehearsal of presentations, questions, and comments.
授業前に調査や 講読を行い、授業中に自分なりのコメントや考えを述べることが求められます。また、与えられたトピックに基づいてプレゼンテーションを行うことも求められます。この自主学習に必要な時間は、授業への出席に必要な時間とほぼ同じです。コース全体を通して、積極的な議論が強く奨励さ れます。したがって、自主学習の時間には、プレゼンテーション、質問、コメントの準備やリハーサルの時間も含まれます。
