    Students will learn how a computer can be used to solve mathematical problems. Although the course will use MATLAB or Octave for this purpose, its focus is more on mastering mathematical skills rather than learning how to use it.

    Starting with the basic usage of Octave (or MATLAB) and how to write a program on it, students will learn how they can solve various mathematical problems by writing and executing simple programs. The first half of each class day will be spent for explaining problems and their solutions. Students will try to solve exercise problems the rest of the time. The course will cover not only mathematics that students have already learned, such as calculus, differential equation, linear algebra, etc., but also those that they have not learned, such as numerical computation, signal processing, statistics, machine learning, etc.

    The goal of this course is to have students master skills of solving the specific problems considered in this course using Octave (or MATLAB) and futher obtain a concept of how they can utilize a computer to deal with novel problems.

    1. Objectives

    The purpose of this class is to learn the basics of linear algebra and be able to apply it to the mathematical and numerical processing required in civil engineering.

    2. Overview

    In this class, students will learn the basic concepts of linear algebra, including the mathematical structure and basis of linear spaces, linear mapping and linear transformation, eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices, and simultaneous linear equations. Students will also learn examples of applications to mathematical and numerical processing required in various scenes of civil engineering, such as numerical integration, polynomial approximation of discrete data, solving linear ordinary differential equations, and principal component analysis.

    The aim of this course is to learn and understand the methods of numerical analysis for practical computation. Students will learn following items: representation of numbers on computer, the concept of numerical error, ways to solve linear equations and differential equations, numerical estimation of functions and integrals.

    Students are expected to learn (1) basic skills to solve problems with numerical analysis, (2) limitations of precision in numerical estimation, and (3) programming for solving numerical problems with computers.

    データ駆動型社会におけるデータ利活用の状況を理解すると共に、データ活用にあたって必要となる法令や倫理、数学や統計学の基本事項を振り返りつつ、標準的なソフトウェアやツール(表計算ソフトやR、 一部Python等を想定)を用いた実習を交えながら、具体的なデータ処理を体験的に学ぶ。また、様々な分析手法の紹介、ならびにデータ分析の注意事項や発展事項にも触れ、応用場面でさらにデータを活用できるよう準備を行う。

    In addition to understanding the status of data utilization in a data-driven society, we will review the laws and regulations, ethics, and basic mathematics and statistics required for data utilization. Students learn concrete data processing through hands-on practice using standard software and tools (assuming spreadsheet software, R, and Python, etc.). They also learn various statistical analysis methods as well as notes on the analysis so that they can prepare for further use of the data in application situations.

    1.Class subject(目的)

    As the learning goal, students have acquired the knowledge of circuit design and organization of modern computer systems.

    2.Object and summary of class(概要)

    After the quick review of computer systems development in the history, the course gives the mathematical foundation for computer system design. Based on the mathematical foundation, the design methodology of basic circuits such as combinational circuits and sequential circuits is given. And then, the course describes how a computer system is constructed by using several basic combinational and sequential circuits, and discusses its functionality to carry out arithmetic and logic operations. In addition, the format of a machine language to direct operations to the computer system and its interpretation to generates control signals will be presented.

    3.Goal of study(達成目標等)

    In this course, students should be able to:

    (1) know the concept of today's computers based on the history of computers development,

    (2) learn data representation for computers and the mathematical foundation of computer arithmetic, and

    (3) understand the concrete structure and functionality of modern computer systems through their basic components of arithmetic unit, memory and control unit as building blocks in terms of hardware and software.
