Hazardous natural phenomenon, such as earthquake, tsunami and volcanism, have repeatedly been occuring throughout the earth's history. A natural disaster is a consequence of impacts or damages to human society induced by natural hazards. Understandings of vulnerabilities of human society, in addition to hazards itselves, is a key to be prepared for natural disasters of various causes. This course lecture deals with basic knowledges of generation mechanisms of various hazards, including earthquake, tsunami and volcanism, and introduces historical examples of large-scale natural disasters to learn how societies can cope with natural disasters.

The class introduces an overview of the natural disasters that have occurred in Japan, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and floods as well as environmental disasters. In addition, modern cities and disasters, crisis management, disaster surveys, and the history of disaster countermeasures in Japan and others are discussed. Countermeasures, their histories, and issues in Japan are comprehensively compiled and the system and information to reduce losses for each hazard are discussed. Comparative study on disasters, statistics, and community map for disaster prevention are introduced.
It aims to acquire basic knowledge to capture the formation of planet Earth's environment as solid earth, atmosphere, ocean, human beings, and to understand familiar natural phenomena occurring on Earth.
In this course, we will discuss challenges related to the construction of a sustainable society from the perspectives of natural sciences, engineering, medicine, humanities, social sciences, and the interdisciplinary fusion of these fields. The focus will be on addressing global-scale climate change and the evolving, complex nature of disasters. The course will explore how to design a resilient society capable of responding to climate change and increasingly complex disasters on a worldwide scale.
The purpose of this lecture is to learn the features of the Earth as a solar system planet, and to understand the environmental changes and life evolution on the Earth. In addition, the purpose is to learn knowledges of geo-hazards (low frequency large disasters) that strongly affect our society.
