This is the lecture organized by other institutions, including Kobe Univ. AIST, JAMSTEC. J-DESC organize the special school and this school is laso a subject. By attending one of them and submitting reports, credits will be granted.
The purpose of this course is to understand the geological structure and environmental evolution of an area based on observation of strata. Students visit Miocene-Pliocene strata exposed verious sections near Sendai, and make columns and sketches.
Exploration and development of oil and natural gas (petroleum) / Carbon Capture and Storge (CCS) are discussed from the geological and geophysical points of view.
Firstly, basics for the petroleum exploration and development are presented. The procedure of petroleum exploration and development and petroleum geology are introduced.
Secondly, the basics of geophysical exploration are introduced. Reflection seismic method has been developed in the area of the petroleum exploration, and applied to the CCS exploration and monotoring. This includes from data acquisition, data processing to interpretation.
Thirdly, actual examples of petroleum exploration and development are introduced. Field examples including geological settings are presented and reservoir characterization and monitoring examples are introduced.
Finally, the background of CCS as a tool for CO2 reduction is introduced, and examples of imaging and monitoring are presented.
Some exercises will be included during the course. Lecture will be given both in Japanese and English ( 20 min. English+ 10 min. summary in Japanese for example).
The Graduate School of Environmental Studies has had a cooperation agreement with Miyagi Prefecture and Sendai City, respectively.
In this lecture, students learn about current status and issues related to environmental policies of Miyagi Prefecture and Sendai City (about climate change such as global warming, promotion of waste reduction and recycling including plastic recycling, and environment-related laws) to achieve environmental conservation and sustainable society, and learn about environmental policies and environmental technologies.
In addition to lectures, this course can help students acquire practical knowledge and develop their ability to think about how to respond to environmental issues through exercise and facility tour.
