The purpose of this course is to deepen the understanding of the bases of seismology and the earthquake source physics through the exercises of the fundamental problems and the numerical calculations.
Why are seismicity and volcanism so active in subduction zones such as the Japanese island arc? The key to understanding this reason lies in the structure of the subsurface and the deformation of the crust. From this perspective, this class will lecture on methods for estimating subsurface structure and measuring crustal deformation, and introduce the latest results obtained from these methods. Based on these methods, the models of how earthquake occurence and volcanic activities in subduction zones can be explained will also be discussed.
This course provides an overview of modern physical science. Thirteen lecturers in the Department of Physics, Department of Geophysics, and Department of Astronomy cover a wide area of physics including nuclear physics, particle physics, condensed matter physics, earth science, and astronomy.
In 1-semester physics A, we focused on the motion of point mass m. Based on the learning results, in Physics B, we will study mainly the motion of waves and deepen our understanding of natural phenomena. You will also learn the basic properties of elastic bodies and fluids, which are treated as the dynamics of the continuum as a medium through which waves travel.
