臨床遺伝専門医・指導医や認定遺伝カウンセラーの指導のもとに、東北大学病院遺伝科、東北大学病院遺伝子診療部各科外来、宮城県立こども病院総合診療科臨床遺伝外来、産科遺伝カウンセリング外来等において、遺伝医療、遺伝カウンセリングに同席して実習をおこなう。
能力に応じて、疾患説明用aids の作成、家系図の聴取や記載、説明の補助や記録、診療後のフォロー、電話フォローアップなどを実習する。担当症例については、遺伝カウンセリング記録を作成し、それをもとに指導医・認定遺伝カウンセラーと、指導教授のスーパーヴァイズを受ける。さらにカンファレンスにて症例発表を担当する。

遺伝カウンセリングの基礎を学ぶ。歴史、概念、面接技術、家族歴の聴取と記載、遺伝医学的評価、患者への教育、リスク・コミュニケーション、倫理的側面、遺伝カウンセリングの研究等について、遺伝カウンセリングの発祥の地である北米の教科書（A Guide to Genetic Counseling）を用いながら、概要を俯瞰する。さらに我が国の状況について理解をする。[Learn the basics of genetic counseling. 遺伝カウンセリングの実践の準備ための講義とロールプレイ等による演習。遺伝カウンセリングにおいて頻度の高い遺伝性疾患を学び、“fact sheet”を作成する。それらの疾患に関してロールプレイを行いながら、遺伝カウンセリングの実践の準備を行う。また、遺伝外来や遺伝カウンセリング外来の外来陪席見学とそれらのカンファレンスの参加を通じて、様々な症例の遺伝カウンセリングの状況を学ぶ。陪席症例については、遺伝カウンセリング記録、カンファレンスにおいての疾患説明等の作成発表を行い、臨床遺伝専門医や認定遺伝カウンセラーの指導を通じて、2年次の遺伝カウンセリング実習への準備を行う。
