古代中世の仏教思想と美術の関係を考える上で重要な絵巻物を取り上げ、詞書きを精読する。そのことを通して、絵画表現に込められた意味を読み取ることに努める。対象は主に寺社縁起・祖師絵伝とし、候補作品には、「石山寺縁起」七巻、「法然上人絵伝」四十八巻、「春日権現験記絵」二十巻、「彦火々出見尊絵巻」六巻、「華厳宗祖師絵伝（華厳縁起）」（元暁絵三巻・義湘絵四巻）、「慕帰絵詞」十巻、「桑実寺縁起」上・下巻、「釈迦堂縁起絵巻」全六巻、「酒伝童子絵巻」上・中・下巻がある。
Students take up the picture scrolls important for considering the relationship between ancient medieval Buddhist thought and art, and carefully read the captions (narrative texts). Through that, students try to read the meaning contained in the painting expression. The object of the study is mainly the picture scrolls of "Jisha-engi" and "Sosi-eden".

Nara, a center of Buddhist culture from ancient times and through the medieval period, has produced and passed down countless masterworks of Buddhist painting in each generation. In light of this importance, the course focuses on the region to explore the development of Buddhist paintings ranging from the [seventh through the sixteenth?] centuries, engaging such problems as painting technique and iconography, painting ateliers, and the enshrinement of paintings in the sacred spaces of rituals.
東洋・日本美術史研究における基盤的な研究論文をとりあげて精読する。毎回一論文を読み、担当者はそのなかで扱われた作品を画像で提示し、資料をレジュメとして示しながら、その内容を紹介する。また参加者は事前に論文を十分に読み込み、発表後に内容についてディスカッションを行う。
Students take up basic research papers of Oriental and Japanese art history and carefully read them. One person give a presentation about contents of papers at each class, showing pictures and documents. Participants will read the paper in advance and discuss the content after the presentation.
東洋または日本美術の中から、特に興味を覚えた作品をとりあげ、各回一名が口頭発表をおこなう。作品そのものの十分な観察をおこなった上で、自身が設定する問題について考察する。その作品について先行研究がある場合は研究史を十分に回顧し、先行研究が乏しい場合は、自ら作品に関する基礎資料・関連資料を博捜・精読・整理する。発表及びその後の討論を通し、参加者に対し自らの考えを的確に伝えるよう努める。
Students take up the artwork that one was particularly interested in from Oriental or Japanese art, and give a presentation at each class.
本講は本当の意味での「美術鑑賞」を行うための実践的授業で、講師の近著である『鑑定学への招待』に書いた内容を実際に行う。つまり、毎回、日本美術史が扱う絵画、彫刻、工芸など諸分野のなかから１作品を取り上げ、そこから読み取るべき情報の獲得を「トレーニング」する。
たとえば、絵画作品について「筆遣いが良い」との評価がなされた場合、それを「実感」するためには「感性」によるしかないと一般的には思われているだろう。ここで言う「感性」とは持って生まれたり、環境によって育まれた個人の「資質」に起因するものだが、そのように規定してしまえば「教育」の余地が失われることになってしまう。けれども、多くの人がそれを「実感」し、共有するためには「教育」が不可欠である。
そこで本講では同じようにみえる類似した２作品を提示し、その中に存在する相違点を見出して指摘、発表していく実習形式をとる。作品比較を続けていけば、やがて「どちらが良い線か」「どちらが上手いか」などの「認識」が育まれてくる。
これは美術史研究にとって不可欠な「スキル」であり、その先に「真贋」の判別にも必要な「鑑識眼」の獲得に結びつくのは言うまでもない。
毎回、他学部や他専修の受講生も参加しており、この論理性を重視する方法論はどのような学問にも有効と考える。未開発の能力が開花する可能性もあるため、美術史を専門としない学生の受講も歓迎する。
This course provides programs of training to read information on Japanese art work.It helps students learn about the differences between Japanese art work by comparison and appreciate them.
日本の物語文学はいつ発生し、いつ終息したのか──。本講義では『源氏物語』に代表される王朝物語文学の成立と展開の様相を、物語文学を取り巻く様々な文芸ジャンルとの相関のもとに、種々の作品テクストを取り上げつつ探っていく。王朝物語の時代は平安から室町と長きにわたるが、とりわけ王朝物語という文芸ジャンルが物語作者の存在意義とも絡んで取り沙汰されるようになる院政期から鎌倉中期を中心に、散逸した物語の資料をも重要な手がかりとしながら、物語文学というコンテンツの消長を探っていく。
When did Japanese narrative literature emerge and when did it end? This lecture will explore the development of the Ōchō Monogatari (tales from the Heian and Kamakura periods), such as the Tale of Genji, by examining various texts of the works, in relation to various literary genres surrounding narrative literature. The era of the dynasty tales extends from Heian to Muromachi. This lecture also explore the fate of narrative literature, using lost stories as clues.
この演習では、美術と深く関わる基礎資料を読み込み、その内容が残されている美術作品とどのように関わっているかについて探求し、資料の創造的な読みを実践しようとするものである。『校刊美術史料寺院篇』・『日本彫刻史基礎資料集成鎌倉時代造像銘記篇』・『江都督納言願文集』・『転法輪抄』・『俊乗房重源史料集成』・『西大寺叡尊傳記集成』から造像に関わる願文（または表白）を選び、それを素材としていく。
