This lecture will cover some aspects of the class instructor's comparative research on the eastern and western peripheries of medieval Japan. The first half of the lecture will focus mainly on historical perceptions and notions of legitimacy in the Tōhoku region and Southern Kyushu. The second half will focus mainly on historical materials of the Tōhoku region. Through the course, students will deepen their understanding of the structure of the Japanese medieval state and the specific methods of historical research.

本講義では、神仏習合の視点からみた東北地方の宗教人類学的考察、日本に関する観光の社会史と観光人類学的考察、日本の宗教的世界観に対する構築主義的視点の導入、という３つのテーマから授業を進める。
In this lecture, the class will focus on three themes: an anthropological examination of religion in the Tohoku region from the perspective of syncretism of Shintoism and Buddhism; a social history of tourism and an anthropological examination of tourism with regard to Japan; and an introduction to a constructionist perspective on the Japanese religious worldview.
受講者各自が日本中世史にかかわる研究成果を報告し、全体で討論する。その中で研究方法を錬磨するとともに、研究発表・討議の技法について学ぶ。また、研究論文作成の一つのステップとする。
Students present research findings on Japanese medieval history and discuss them. Through that, students refine their research methods and master about skills of presentation and discussion. Students will also learn how to write theses.
歴史学は実証の上に成り立つ学問であり、それを学ぶ者は歴史資料を的確に読みこなすことができなければならない。本講では、その第一歩として日本中世史に関する代表的な史料を講読し、基礎的な読解力を身につけることを目標とする。また、中世社会の特質についても考える。
Historiography is a discipline that stands on proofs. Students studying Historiography must be able to read historical materials accurately. As a first step, in this class, students read standard historical materials in the Middle Ages and gain the fundamental skills to read them. Students also consider the characteristics of Japanese medieval society.
経済史学は、異なる地域の経済発展過程を比較する視点を内包している。アダム・スミスやF・ブローデル、D・ノースといった著名な学者らは、優れた比較経済史の論者としても知られている。比較の視点は、後発工業国の経済発展の分析や、先進国間の歴史的な違いを探究する際にも、その効果を発揮する。例えば、どの国でも都市は最も進んだ経済活動の中心地であるが、都市化の過程は国によって異なっている。そのため、都市の比較史を通じて、経済を支える固有の制度や社会的価値観を明らかにすることが可能になる。本講義では、こうした比較史の利点を最大限活用し、長期の西欧経済史について概説を行う。受講者は、自国の経済との類似点・相違点についての理解を深め、社会的な質の観点から経済力を相対的に評価する能力を身に付けることが期待される。
本講義では、偏った経済学的思考に陥らない"pluralist economics"の精神を尊重しつつ、欧米と同じ自由市場経済体制下にある日本経済の行く末を見据える上で欠かせない基礎的知識の習得を目指す。

Approximately 100 years behind the developed country of Britain, the late-industrializing country of Japan also experienced its first industrial revolution in Asia, thereby joining the ranks of developed countries by the early 20th century. In addition to the ‘first industrialized country’ in the region, there are striking similarities in the economic histories of Britain and Japan. For instance, just as the Japanese economy prospered from cultural exchanges with Western countries, the British economy was also supported by its interactions with Asian countries. The point at which the economy improved during the run-up to the industrial revolution can also be said to be a common feature between the two countries.
The purpose of finding similarities in the different economies is ultimately to highlight their ‘differences’. According to the latest research, it has become clear that a typical example separating the history of the two countries lies in the process of urbanisation leading to a modern economy. Towns and cities serve as vibrant economic hubs that laid the groundwork for contemporary society. The disparities in their development hint at a potentially insurmountable divide between the fundamental political and social values bolstering seemingly identical advanced economies. This lecture series will delve into an examination of the significant historical differences between the two leading economies, respectively representing the West and the East.

Quand on étudie l'évolution politique de la France contemporaine, il est extrêmement important de mieux comprendre les conditions de la société locale, ainsi que leurs rôles historiques par rapport au pouvoir central de l'État, libérés de la vision historique biaisée du « Paris-centrisme » (centrée sur la capitale). Pour une partie de l'étude, ce cours traitera des problèmes relatifs aux relations politiques entre le pouvoir central - l'État et la communauté locale, observées dans la France contemporaine, en se concentrant sur le pouvoir local et les intérêts viti-vinicoles dans quelques régions productrices de vin.
In exploring the political evolution of Post-Revolutionary France, it is extremely important to more appropriately understand conditions of local society and their historical roles in relation to the "central power", freed from a "Paris-centred historical perspective". As part of the study, this course will address issues related to the political relationship between the central power of the State and local communities observed in Post-Revolutionary France, focusing on the local powers and wine interests in some wine-producing regions.
近代フランスの政治史的展開を考察するうえで、「パリ中心史観」から脱却し、「中央」の動向との関連において地域社会（ローカルレベル）のありようや歴史的役割をより的確に把握することはきわめて重要である。その一環として本授業は、さしあたり革命後フランスにおけるワイン産地の地域権力および同地のワイン業利害に注目し、国家（中央政治）と地域社会の関係性をめぐる諸問題について考察する。
