(1) The instructor will give a brief lecture on what religion is, with group discussion.
(2) From newspaper articles on religion, each student (or group) will select a topic of interest, research its social and academic background and significance, and present their findings.
(3) Using the findings from (2), review the relevant entries in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Identify any shortcomings or problems, and discuss in class how they can be corrected or updated.
(4) Exposure to active religion. Students may either hear from a religious leader or visit a local religious facility to observe rituals and religious activities in action.
本講義では、日本と世界の主要な宗教文化をとりあげてその歴史、教え、儀礼などを概説し、グローバル化した現代社会を生きるために必要な基礎的知識と、異なる宗教の人々と交流するためのリテラシーの涵養をはかる。
In this course, students will think about the history, teachings, and rituals of the major religious cultures of Japan and the world. We will gain the basic knowledge necessary to live in today's globalized society, and improve literacy to interact with people of different religions.

社会福祉の源流として、キリスト教など諸宗教の慈善活動がある。これらの慈善活動そのものは意義深いものであるが、時代性による限界もあって、人権意識や平等性に課題があった。そのような前近代的課題を克服することで、個人の自由を前提とした「社会福祉」が発展した。このような経緯を踏まえて、日本での仏教社会福祉史、バングラデシュの仏教徒と社会福祉活動、⻑岡⻄病院ビハーラ病棟、東日本大震災後の被災者支援活動などを例に、宗教と社会福祉の関係性について考察し、超高齢多死社会となる日本社会において、宗教が果たし得る役割について検討する。
The source of social welfare is the charity activities of various religions, including Christianity. Although these charity activities themselves are significant, they are limited by the times, and there are issues with human rights awareness and equality. By overcoming such pre-modern challenges, "social welfare" based on individual freedom developed. Based on this background, we will consider the relationship between religion and social welfare, using examples such as the history of Buddhist social welfare in Japan, Buddhists and social welfare activities in Bangladesh, the Vihara Ward of Nagaoka Nishi Hospital, and support activities for victims after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and so on. We will examine the role of religion in Japanese society, which is becoming a super-aging death-ridden society.

本授業では，A. L. Basham, History and Doctrines of THE ĀJĪVIKAS. A Vanished Indian Religion（アージーヴィカ教の歴史と教理. インドの消滅した宗教）（London 1951）原文の講読を通じて，仏教興起時代（紀元前5世紀頃）に至るインドの宗教と社会の成り立ちを紹介する。受講者は予習としてBashamの英語原文を和訳し，その内容について講師が解説する。サンスクリット語，パーリ語，並びにこれらの言語で伝承される原典についても随時紹介し，インドの言語文化に直接触れることのできる機会を提供する。今年度は前年度に終えた部分のコピーを配布し，本論部分から読み始める。
This course introduces overview of the history of religion and society in early Buddhist India (c. 5C. B.C.) based on A. L. Basham, History and Doctrines of THE ĀJĪVIKAS: A Vanished Indian Religion (London 1951). Students will translate some parts of this book into Japanese as preparation for the class. They also listen to lectures on the history of Indian Buddhism. This class will offer students an opportunity to get familiar with some passages of the Veda or Buddhist Canon traditioned in Sanskrit and Pāli, the languages of ancient India.
