この講義では、日本の宗教美術、特に彫刻について信仰との関わりから論じる。不可視の世界を構想する宗教にとって美術は重要な役割を持っている。宗教美術を理解することは、人間の精神世界に近づくことを可能にするのだ。前期は、飛鳥時代から鎌倉時代までの仏教的世界観を概観しながら、その世界観に基づく美術を時代順に論じていく。
In this course I discuss religious arts in East Asia, especially sculptures from the relationship with faith. Art has an important role for religion that envisages invisible world. Understanding religious art makes it possible to approach human spiritual world. In the first semester classes, I will provide an overview of the Buddhist worldview from the Asuka period to the Kamakura period, and discuss art based on that worldview in chronological order.
現代の美術や写真において、現実と虚構、自然と技術のあいだの境界線を揺らがせるような作品をしばしば「魔術的」と呼ぶことがあります。しかし、美術と魔術の相関関係はすでに古代において発見されていたものであり、初期近代にかけて美術と魔術（そして科学）は、自然を操作する人為的技芸として本質的レベルで交錯しながら発展しました。この授業では、特にイタリア・ルネサンスの時代の美術に注目して、美術と魔術の共鳴現象を具体的な作品や作家の事例の分析を通じて、現代では忘れられがちな美術の一側面を解説します。
In contemporary art and photography, we often refer to works of art that shake the boundaries between reality and fiction, nature and technology as "magical. However, the correlation between art and magic was already discovered in ancient times, and in the early modern period, art and magic (and science) developed as artificial arts that manipulate nature, intermingling at an essential level. In this class, we will focus on the Italian Renaissance in particular, and through the analysis of specific works and examples of artists, we will explain aspects of art that are often forgotten in the modern world.

古代から中世にかけて仏教文化の中心地だった奈良は、各時代にわたって描き継がれた仏画の重要作品が数多く伝わっている。こうした奈良の地に視点を据えて古代から中世に至る仏画作品の展開を概観し、その絵画技法や図像、絵画工房、安置儀礼空間の問題などを考察する
Nara, a center of Buddhist culture from ancient times and through the medieval period, has produced and passed down countless masterworks of Buddhist painting in each generation. In light of this importance, the course focuses on the region to explore the development of Buddhist paintings ranging from the [seventh through the sixteenth?] centuries, engaging such problems as painting technique and iconography, painting ateliers, and the enshrinement of paintings in the sacred spaces of rituals.
美術という日本語に含まれた「美」という言葉は、しばしば、絵画や彫刻が美がかりでなく、もっと多様な感覚を生み出すという事実を忘れさせてしまいます。しかし、古代から現代まで、絵画や彫刻は笑いをも生み出してきました。この授業では、イタリア・ルネサンス美術を素材にして、視覚的ユーモアがいかにして生起していったかを具体的な作品を通じて理解します。
The word "beauty" in the Japanese word "art" often makes us forget the fact that paintings and sculptures create not only beauty but also more diverse senses. However, from ancient times to the present, painting and sculpture have also produced laughter. In this class, we will look at Italian Renaissance art to understand how visual humor emerged through specific works.
この講義では、古代日本の造形、特に彫刻について信仰との関わりから論じる。不可視の世界を構想する宗教にとって美術は重要な役割を持っている。宗教美術を理解することは、人間の精神世界に近づくことを可能にするのだ。後期はまず、平安時代の美術と関係の深い北宋時代の美術を紹介した後、清凉寺釈迦如来像の請来がもたらした平安時代以降の宗教美術の意義について論じる。その後、摂関期から鎌倉時代の宗教美術について、代表的な僧侶の思想を踏まえた観点から論じていく。

In the second semester classes, I will first introduce the art of the Northern Song Dynasty, which is closely related to the art of the Heian period, and then discuss the significance of religious art since the Heian period, which was brought about by the arrival of the Shaka Nyorai statue at Seiryoji Temple. Afterwards, we will discuss religious art from the Sekkan period to the Kamakura period from a perspective based on the thoughts of representative monks.

古代から現代までの西洋の建築の歴史を通観する。古代ではギリシャ・ローマの建築を中心に解説する。中世は、ロマネスクからゴシックへの様式展開を跡づけることを主眼とする。そして、近世はルネサンス・マニエリスム・バロックの様式変遷を理解する。20世紀はモダニズムからポストモダンの流れを概観する。西洋建築の変遷と，各時代・地域における様式的特徴の理解を目指す。

The course will explain the History of Western Architecture; Greek and Rome in Ancient times; Romanesque and Gothic in the Middle Ages; Renaissance and Baroque in the Early Modern Period; Modernism and Postmodern in Modern Times. The lecture aims to enable students to understand each architectural style and its characteristics.
