Majority of environmental problems are caused by excessive consumption of fuels and transformation of natural resources accompanying emission of chemical substances to environment. To solve the problems, quantitative understanding of environment is essential. This lecture covers main topics of environmental science including structure and composition of the earth, formation and distribution of underground resources, natural cycles of elements, chemistry of atmosphere and aquatic environmental chemistry.

*As a background, many international conferences and meetings have been organized. That's why this class is aiming to train undergraduate (or graduate) students to be able to give presentations and to have meaningful discussions in English.
*Most classes are organized in a web meeting style (Zoom) and most presentation classes are held at CYRIC. *Instructions and explanations on basic issues will be delivered mainly in Japanese, and later in English if possible. All participants may need basic knowledge on both Japanese and English languages.

This lesson focuses on the diversity found in living organisms, both individual and genetic diversity within a population and the diversity of species present within a community. The question of why individuals and genes with different properties are maintained in a population is linked to the question of diversity within human populations. Apart from that, the question of why there is a diversity of species on the planet and how such biodiversity is maintained, and the question of the impact of biodiversity on human society, is also relevant to the issue of sustainable human society. Participants will deepen their understanding of such diversity issues by asking questions and discussing them during the lectures. They will also deepen their understanding of diversity by attending lectures on biodiversity, reading literature and presenting their findings. Based on these, students will also consider various issues related to the diversity of living organisms, including humans.
