The purpose of this course is to learn techniques of introductory experimental physics and to understand basic concepts of physics by hands-on experience.
Based on basic knowledge of physics, students experience introductory experiments of leading researches and deepen understanding of importance of experiments in modern physics.
The purpose of this course is to provide hands-on training in geophysical experiments and observations. A variety of modern and historical experiments and observations are covered, with emphasis on experimental design, experimental techniques, data acquisition and analysis, scientific communication, and time management.
In this course, students will understand (1) basic physics applicable for astronomical phenomena and (2) basic methods of observational data analysis, by practice and discussion. We will discuss motions of stars and gasses in galaxies, gas motions around black holes, radiation from gasses, global structure of galaxies, and so on. Related physics include mechanics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, and so on.
Electromagnetism overturned the common sense of classical mechanics and became the cornerstone toward modern physics.
The purpose of this lecture is to understand its essence.
In electromagnetism I, the physics of static electric and magnetic fields "without time variations" is introduced.
"Electric field" is treated in the first half.
"Current" and "Magnetic field" appear in the second half.
In this world, both fields are independent yet.
In this lecture we begin with reviewing the basic concepts of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and discuss the physics (spectra and structure) of hadrons from microscopic perspectives. Then we discuss QCD in extreme conditions, such as hot QCD matter created by heating hadrons, and dense QCD matter made of highly compressed nuclei. The extreme matters in QCD are intensively studied by the interplay of theories, experiments, and observations.
In the first half of the lectures we review important concepts of QCD; asymptotic freedom, spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the dynamics of the Nambu-Goldstone boson, and quark confinement. In the latter half, we discuss the hot and dense QCD.
The topics will be chosen after checking the preference of the audiences.
The main target is the freshman of the master course.
This course will not treat detailed and technical calculations;
we instead spend time to focus on the physical and phenomenological aspects of QCD.
But if some calculations are crucial to understand the structure of the theory,
some typical calculations will be explicitly performed.
