For modern Japanese people, another worlds are mainly seen as important materials for manga and anime, but there is no doubt that in the past, another worlds and the afterlife have had a great influence on the formation of Japanese thought. However, even though the land of Yomi described in the Nihon Shoki（Chronicle of Japan completed in 720） and the Pure Land described by medieval Buddhist monks are the same afterlife, their characteristics are very different. How have another worlds and afterlife changed over the course of history for the Japanese people? In this course, we will use ancient and medieval Buddhist tales as material to explore the transformation of the idea of another worlds and afterlife, and further examine its historical background.

歴史学という学問は、確かな文字史料に基づいて進められるものと考えられがちである。しかし、前近代社会において、多くの知識は文字よりも話し言葉を通じて伝達されてきた。歴史学において、このような知識伝達手段の変化に着目することは、大切な課題である。そこで、本授業では、日本史上における様々な噂話を取り上げ、口頭言語を通じて形成された日本思想の特質を明らかにする。 / The discipline of history tends to be thought of as being based on reliable written historical materials. However, in pre-modern societies, much knowledge was transmitted through the spoken word rather than the written word. In historical studies, it is an important issue to focus on these changes in the means of transmitting knowledge. This course deals with various rumors in Japanese history and clarifies the characteristics of Japanese thought formed through oral language.

Nara, a center of Buddhist culture from ancient times and through the medieval period, has produced and passed down countless masterworks of Buddhist painting in each generation. In light of this importance, the course focuses on the region to explore the development of Buddhist paintings ranging from the [seventh through the sixteenth?] centuries, engaging such problems as painting technique and iconography, painting ateliers, and the enshrinement of paintings in the sacred spaces of rituals.

In this course I discuss religious arts in East Asia, especially sculptures from the relationship with faith. Art has an important role for religion that envisages invisible world. Understanding religious art makes it possible to approach human spiritual world. In the first semester classes, I will provide an overview of the Buddhist worldview from the Asuka period to the Kamakura period, and discuss art based on that worldview in chronological order.
中国中世の仏教について、学術の形式や思想活動の場、信仰と実践、また史学や医学、文学などの文化全般との関わりに注意しながら考察する。
In this course Chinese medieval Buddhism will be discussed, paying attention to their academic forms and sites of intellectual activity, rituals and practices, as well as their relationship to culture in general, including history, medicine and literature.

概要：私たちをとりまく都市・建築は、どのようにつくられ、使われ、意味を帯びてきたのか。この講義では、古代から近代以前における日本建築の歴史を考える。そのさい、建造物の意匠や空間、構造、さらにはそれらをつくりだした理念や社会背景など、様々な視点から多角的に、かつ東アジアとの文化的な対外交渉関係をふまえながら検討してゆく。
達成目標等：日本建築の歴史的変遷を理解し、文化の特質について考える。

This lecture aims to understand the history of Japanese architecture from various viewpoints.
The primary goal of this lecture is to review Japanese architecture from Ancient Times to the Modern age from various viewpoints such as design, technique, idea, and social background based on a cultural relation with East Asia.
