ジェイン・オースティンに焦点を当てながら、18世紀～19世紀初頭におけるイギリス小説の展開を跡づけます。イギリスは近代的なリアリズム小説が比較的早い時期に成立しましたが、そのひとつの完成形がオースティンの小説です。その背景には政治的・社会的な要因が大きく作用しています。この授業では、そうした歴史的背景を説明しながら、オースティンと彼女に先立ついくつかの作家の作品を紹介してゆきます。同時に、小説の批評的な分析方法も紹介してゆきます。また、英語力を養うために、各作品の名場面を英語の原文で鑑賞します。
This lecture traces the history of English novel from the 18th- to 19th century, focusing on the works of Jane Austen. In Britain, modern realist novels developed relatively earlier than other European countries, and we find its fully developed form in Jane Austen. This course will read major works of Jane Austen and some of her predecessors, also paying attention to the method of analysis of literary works.
英文学のジャンルの中でも詩は馴染みがうすいかもしれません。しかし、詩を読解することによって言葉そのものがもつ不思議さと大きな力を知り、英語という言葉の奥深さに触れることができます。この授業では、ルネサンスから20世紀に書かれたイギリスの詩の中から、とても有名で比較的短いものを選んで読解してゆきます。詩はジャンルや約束事が分からないと理解できない作品が多いので、そうした事項を説明しながら詩のテクストを読解してゆきます。詩は読者から近づいて行かないと何も答えてくれませんが、直接詩の原文に触れて積極的に問いかけてゆけば詩はいろいろなことを答えてくれるはずです。
This lecture covers English poetry from the Renaissance to the 20th century, focusing on famous poems in these periods. Because poetry is usually written based on literary tradition and conventions, this lecture pays attention to the knowledge of literary genres and conventions. Generally speaking, poems don't seem to talk to you if you don't approach to poems for yourself, but if you ask questions to poems, they will surely give you rewarding answers.
In this class we will read the short novel Cranford (1853) by Elizabeth Gaskell. This is a comic description of life in small town in Victorian England yet is also shows us a lot about changing ideas and contexts of 19th century Britain (the Victorian period). Therefore, during the class we will study the many aspects of Victorian culture and society that are mentioned in the novel: the role of women and men; the English class system; the railways and the industrial revolution; the countryside and the city; the impact of the British Empire and globalization.
この授業では、エリザベス・ガスケルの短編小説『クランフォード』（1853年）を読みます。この小説は、ヴィクトリア朝イギリスの小さな町の生活をコミカルに描いたものですが、19世紀イギリス（ヴィクトリア朝時代）の考え方や背景の変化についても多くのことを教えてくれます。そこで授業では、この小説に登場するヴィクトリア朝の文化や社会の様々な側面、つまり女性と男性の役割、イギリスの階級制度、鉄道と産業革命、田舎と都会、大英帝国の影響とグローバリゼーションについて学ぶ。
Kazuo Ishiguro is the acclaimed Japanese-born and British-based author who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017. The Remains of the Day (1989) is one of his most famous novels (and later adapted into a popular movie), which describes the life and love of a butler serving an English aristocrat in the 1930s, and how he reacts to the coming of the Second World War. In this course we will study Ishiguro’s novel as both an example of contemporary English fiction about social class, and as a way to think about the memory of the World War in British Postwar culture. Students will read a part of the novel each week and in the class we will discuss relevant topics. Students should learn about the style of modern fiction, techniques for reading, and improve subject knowledge about twentieth-century culture.
カズオ・イシグロは、2017年にノーベル文学賞を受賞した、日本生まれで英国在住の高名な作家である。日の名残り』（1989年）は彼の最も有名な小説の一つで（後に映画化され人気を博した）、1930年代の英国貴族に仕える執事の人生と愛、そして第二次世界大戦の到来に対する彼の反応を描いている。 このコースでは、社会階級を扱った現代イギリス小説の一例として、また戦後イギリス文化における世界大戦の記憶について考える方法として、イシグロの小説を学ぶ。受講生は毎週小説の一部を読み、クラスでは関連するトピックについて議論する。現代小説のスタイルや読解のテクニックを学び、20世紀文化に関する知識を深める。

Close reading of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland & Alice through the Lookin-Glass. These works are written in easy English that even children can understand, but there are various kinds of mysterious and laughing materials. We read closely the texts in order to appreciate the unique taste of these works. In each class, three students make report on the contents of the text and we make discussion based on the report.
This course will consider the period of the “Postwar” in British Literature (1945-2000s). We will read a selection of short stories and study them in the literary, historical and cultural context of literature after World War Two. Topics for study will include: the style of the short story; social class and change in post-war Britain; gender and identity; science, technology and the environment; understanding literary history and periodization of the modern. Students should improve skills for reading fiction in English and understanding comparative modern culture.
このコースでは、イギリス文学における「戦後」の時代（1945-2000年代）を考察する。選りすぐりの短編小説を読み、第二次世界大戦後の文学、歴史、文化的背景の中で研究する。学習内容には、短編小説のスタイル、戦後イギリスの社会階級と変化、ジェンダーとアイデンティティ、科学技術と環境、文学史の理解と現代の時代区分などが含まれる。学生は、英語で小説を読み、比較近代文化を理解するスキルを向上させる。
本演習は、明治期から近年にいたる多様な小説について、〈生き物〉の表象（特に動植物に関する文学的表現）という観点を軸に、多様な社会的・文化的なコンテクストを視野に入れて分析を行うことを目的とする。
受講者は、担当する作品についての分析の結果を資料に基づいて発表する。発表内容を踏まえた全体での討論をとおして、小説の精緻な読解を試みる。
The purpose of this exercise is to analyze various novels from the Meiji period to recent years from the viewpoint of the representation of "living things" (especially the literary representation of animals and plants) with a view to various social and cultural contexts.
Students present the results of their analysis of literary works. We try to read the novel in detail through the discussion based on the presentation.

A close reading of the fisrt half of Paul Auster's “Moon Palce.” Auster is famous for his style of story-tellingg. In this novel, Auster describes, through a story of a young man's life and adventure, what America is. The plot structure is Complicated, to be sure, but the reading experience of this novel will be very rewarding. In each class, three students make report on the contents of the text and we make discussion based on the report.
John Milton (1608-1674) is one of the most influential, and controversial, poets in the English language, whose work has influenced many famous world of English and Literature, and continues to provoke readers today. This course will read a selection of his major poetical works, including his early lyric poetry collected in Poems (1645), and excerpts from his masterpiece, the epic poem, Paradise Lost (1667). We will study the literary and historical background of the seventeenth century, including his use of literary genres, the influence of religious belief on his work, and ideas of cultural and political conflict during his lifetime , and also consider some of the historical reception of his work.

室生犀星の王朝小説を原典の古典作品と読み比べることで、古典文学の世界を近代小説の翻案を通して学ぶ。授業の進め方としては、各回に指定されている犀星の王朝小説と原典となっている古典作品をあらかじめ精読し、教室では読書会形式をとることで、鑑賞を交えた批評を自由に述べてディスカッションしていく。教員はモデレーター役を務めるが、受講生全員が意見を述べ応答し合うインタラクティブな場を作り、継続的なテーマを発見していくことを目指す。
Students will learn the world of classical literature through adaptations of modern novels by reading and comparing Murou Saisei's dynasty novel with the classic works of the original text. As for how to proceed with the class, carefully read Saisei's dynasty novel designated for each lesson and the classic works that are the original texts in advance, and take the form of a reading party in the classroom to freely state and discuss criticisms including appreciation. The faculty will act as a moderator, but the aim is to create an interactive place where all the students can express their opinions and respond to each other, and discover continuous themes.
