放射性同位体の基礎知識を学ぶと同時に、Re-Os放射性同位体などを用い手、マグマの成因、海洋の進化、鉱床の成因を議論する。講義は集中講義形式で海洋研究開発機構の鈴木勝彦博士が担当する。

この講義は主に掛川が担当し、太陽系、地球、生命の起源に関する基礎知識を学ぶ。さらにそれらがいかに進化していったかの概略を学ぶ。さらに、様々な先生が、地球物質に関する最新のトピックを提供する。

先カンブリア時代、特に太古代の地質に関して学ぶ。コマチアイト、トロンジェマイト、縞状鉄鉱層などの太古代特有の岩石の性質、それらを形成するテクとニック場に関しても学ぶ。さらに太古代の中で生物がどのように進化して行ったか、それが地球化学の記録にどのように残されているか学ぶ。掛川研究室で行われてきた海外の野外調査で撮影されたビデオなども使い、地層の特徴を解説する。
