The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and ability to consider geographical solutions for various environmental issues in the humanosphere, such as climate change adaptation and prevention and/or mitigation of disasters, based on the physical-geographic understanding of the earth's critical zone systems created by the spatial connectivity and temporal evolution of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere.

Natural ecosystem consists of various landscape elements including forests, streams, and the ocean. The watershed ecosystems are strongly linked with each other through the flow of water. In this lecture, we will introduce the ecosystem processes (including biogeochemistry, geomorphology, species interactions etc)in each landscape elements, and how they are connected with each other.
The Japan Island is characterized by the tectonic activities related with subduction zone, volcanos, faults and landslides. The main purpose of this course is to review basic knowledge and understand the significance of tectonic factors and to consider their influence for geology and geography.
Geo-environmental science is designed as the interdisciplinary branch among earth science to research phenomena occurred with interactions between geologic factors under the surface of ground and climatic environments above the surface. This study area evolves various information of geology, topography, climatology and vegetation and land use, so on, which are linked to be analyzed totally with GIS tools. Students learn the geo-environmental ideas and methods through air-photo interpretation, principle of paleontology, and sediment analysis with water tube in this class.
