The Japan Island is characterized by the tectonic activities related with subduction zone, volcanos, faults and landslides. The main purpose of this course is to review basic knowledge and understand the significance of tectonic factors and to consider their influence for geology and geography.
This course serves as an introductory course for students who have not learned earth science in senior high schools. In this course, students will learn evolution of organisms and environmental changes in the Earth's surface from the biogeochemical point of view.
The Department of Earth Science consists of two divisions, the Division of GeoEnvronmental Science and the Division of Earth and Planetary Materials Science. These two divisions have a total of 13 research groups (Carbonate Sedimentology, Geochemistry, and Evolutional Paleontology; Fault and Geodynamics; Geology and Paleoceanography; Geomorphology and Physical Geography; Human Geography; Natural Hazard; Mineralogy and Crystallography; Natural Resources and Environmental Geochemistry; Early Solar System Evolution; Quantum-beam Earth Science and Technology; Volcanology and Geofluids; Petrotectonics; Global Crystal Science). Students can learn basic knowledge that cannot be obtained in high school education and the latest research achievement of each group.
It aims to acquire basic knowledge to capture the formation of planet Earth's environment as solid earth, atmosphere, ocean, human beings, and to understand familiar natural phenomena occurring on Earth.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and ability to consider geographical solutions for various environmental issues in the humanosphere, such as climate change adaptation and prevention and/or mitigation of disasters, based on the physical-geographic understanding of the earth's critical zone systems created by the spatial connectivity and temporal evolution of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere.
