Organic chemistry forms a basis for understanding the properties, structures, and reactions of organic compounds existing in nature, living things, medicines, and materials. Organic compounds are of great variety, but basic concepts of understanding their properties, structures, and reactions are not that many. In this course, students learn the basic concepts of organic chemistry and their applications to specific substances.
The purpose of this class is to understand the basic organic chemistry of alcohol, ether, pi-conjugated diene, pericyclic reaction, and aromatic compounds. The “Organic Chemistry” textbook written by Klein will be used, and this class will cover chapters of 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, and 19.
In this course, the students will first learn the structure and bonding of organic molecules and the concept of hybridization involved, which form the foundation of organic chemistry. Secondly, the students will learn the concepts of resonance and electronegativity and explore acid-base reactions and the acidity of various acids, which represent the most basic form of chemical reaction and reactivity. Thirdly, the students will grasp the property and reactivity of common functional groups and explore how functionalized organic molecules play important roles in vivo. Last, the students will learn the chemistry of alkanes, the most basic class of organic compounds, exploring their nomenclature, physical properties, and reactivity. They will also learn the concept of conformation and the Fischer projection as a means to understand the molecular structures of alkanes.
