Usual materials are composed of many atoms and molecules, which are interacting each other through complex interactions. These materials show a variety of phases, such as solid, liquid and gas phases. Their macroscopic properties can be understood in terms of statistical considerations based on the large number of degrees of freedom. In this lecture, in order to understand the physical properties of macroscopic systems composed of many constituent particles, we study the basic concepts of statistical physics and its applications to simple examples.
