As opposed to classical mechnics, which normally start with the Newton's equations, analytical mechanics treats the same problem from general points of view. We introduce the Eular-Lagrange eqution by applying the principle of least action to the action of an mechanical system, and show this is equivalent to the Newton's formula. By demanding the homogeniety in space and time, we derive several basic quatities, including energy, that are conserved. We also take several mechanical systems as examples and employ Lagrangian formalism to solve apparently complicated situations. Finally, students are exposed to Hamilton formalism through Legendre transformation. Canonical transformation and Poisson brackets will also be introduced, thereby making the connection to quantum mechanics.
