Course Title (授業題目)

Introduction to pragmatics

授業の目的と概要

は、ことばの意味が状況や対人関係に応じてどのように変わるかを分析する学問です。本科目では、語用論的に見て動きのある身近な言語現象を取り上げながら、これまでに発展してきた語用論の理論の概要を理解し、それらの理論を実証的に検証した主要な先行研究の要点を把握します。

Course Objectives and Course Synopsis(授業の目的と概要)

According to our inner motivations, language is used for various purposes with various others in various situations. The study of pragmatics concerns the processes where a linguistic expression can have many different meanings depending on the context, situation, and interpersonal relationship. This course surveys some familiar language phenomena in terms of pragmatics, through which students understand core theories of pragmatics and the major empirical findings which examined those theories.

学習の到達目標

身近な言語現象を語用論の視点から独自に分析的に考えられるようになる。また、実際の言語使用は使用者の特性（個人間の差および個人内の変化）に大きく左右されるものであることへの理解と受容の態度を持つ。

Learning Goals(学習の到達目標)

Upon completion of this course, each student should have an analytic perspective of pragmatics about language phenomena. Students are also expected to be aware of, and open-minded about the diversity of language uses, which are highly dependent upon individual differences and changes (within and between individuals).

授業内容・方法と進度予定

以下の話題を取り上げる予定である。
(1) あいさつ：対人関係構築の端緒を開く
(2) 呼称：人をどう呼ぶか？呼ばないか？
(3) あいづち：促しか？さえぎりか？
(4) 敬語の古今：通時的変化をたどる
(5) 敬語の東西：共時的変化をたどる
(6) 間接的発話行為：なぜはっきり言わないの？
(7) ことばと感情：話し手の気持ちが現れる言語マーカー
(8) 子どものことば：発達における共同注意の役割
(9) ことばの性差：遺伝的影響？環境的影響？
(10) 母語と外国語：その習得過程の違い
(11) ことばと加齢：衰える機能、保たれる機能、向上する機能
(12) ことばの障害：語用論的処理を中心に

The following is an approximate schedule of lecture topics:
(1) Greeting: the first step to establishing an interpersonal relationship
(2) Address term: how to call others or not?
(3) Backchannel: facilitate or interrupt others talking?
(4) Honorifics: its diachronic change
(5) Honorifics: its synchronic distribution
(6) Indirect speech act: the reason not to say baldly
(7) Language and emotion: linguistic markers reflecting speakers’ feelings
(8) Child language: the role of joint attention for development
(9) Gender differences in language: innate or acquired?
(10) First and second language: difference in learning processes
(11) Language and aging: decline, maintained, or improved functions
(12) Language disorder: focusing on pragmatic language processing

成績評価方法

毎回授業の最後に課す小課題（50％）、最終筆記試験（50％）

Grading Plan(成績評価方法)

Grades will be calculated based on minute papers (50%) and a final exam (50%).

教科書および参考書

指定しない。参考文献は授業中随時紹介する。

授業時間外学習

毎回とりあげるテーマに関連の深い文献を紹介するので、それを読むこと。 また、授業でとりあげた話題に照らして、日常的に使われていることばの機能を考え直してみること。

その他

本授業は、前期に開講される「言語学概論I」とは独立しているので、前期の授業を受講していなくても差し支えない。本授業では、出席を重視する。
