学術研究に使える英語らしい英語での作文能力の養成

授業の目的・概要及び達成方法等

この授業では、自然言語（英語、日本語など）の構造と意味の関係を支配する一般規則（いわゆる「文法」）の概略を紹介した上で、「文法」に基づく英文の論理的読解と和文英訳の能力を向上させるための演習を行う。具体的には、英文法を十分に理解した上で、それに基づいて英語の読解と作文の訓練を行うことで、学術研究に使える正確で高度な英語のコミュニケーション能力を身につけることを目指す。

授業の目的・概要及び達成方法等(Ｅ）

In this class, you will be given lectures on the general rules that govern the syntax and semantics of natural languages (the so-called “grammar”) such as English and Japanese, and practical activities that will help you improve your own skills of logical reading and formal writing of English articles. More specifically, you will be expected to learn how to communicate in an accurate and sophisticated English that is formally acceptable in academic activities, by understanding the English grammar and making practices of reading and writing based on the knowledge.

英語と日本語の共通性と相違点を現代言語理論の視点から捉え直し、学術研究に使える正確で高度な英語のコミュニケーション能力を身につける。

You will be expected to understand in what respects English is similar to Japanese and in what other respects they are different from the viewpoint of modern linguistic theories, and learn how to communicate in an accurate and sophisticated English that is formally acceptable in academic activities.

授業内容・方法と進度予定/Contents and progress schedule of the class

この授業では、統語論・形態論・語彙意味論を専門とする教員が、言語学の観点から見て重要だと考えるものの日本人が苦手とする英語についての特徴や、英語と日本語との関連性についての認識が乏しい以下の特徴についての概説を行い、それらについて、現代英語の話し言葉・新聞・小説・学術論文などさまざまな媒体をソースとするコーパスからの実例を演習課題として提供し、これらの英文の読解や、これらの英文でよく使われる表現に近づけるための和文英訳の演習課題などを行う。
　授業は、日本語で行う。

The grammar of the Japanese language is quite different from that of English in many respects, and that will prevent you Japanese from writing English in a formally acceptable expression. The teacher of this class is a linguist who is specialized in syntax and morphology and the other of which is specialized in syntax and semantics. The teachers will give you several pieces of advice and know-how you need to be careful in writing English in a formal, academic context, including how English is different from Japanese.
The materials for the class activities and assignments will be taken from various corpora that compile texts of spoken languages, newspaper articles, novels, academic articles, and so on, and you will use them to improve your ability of reading academic articles written in English and/or your own English composition.
This class will be conducted in Japanese.

成績評価方法/Evaluation Method

授業中に行う課題の出来と期末のレポートで総合評価する。

You will be evaluated by the grades of several assignments you will submit and by the term-final report.

授業中に随時課す課題（英語の非母語話者として日本人が国際的な研究活動を行う上で役立つ英文の作成）に回答する。
学期末のレポートを書く準備を行う。

You will write in English the paragraphs the teachers assign to you (including a Japanese-to-English translation of article-style sentences and paragraphs that we need to be careful of as a non-native,　speaker of English) and submit them by a designated deadline.　
You will also prepare for the term-final report.

日本語以外の言語を母語とし、自然言語の構造上の特性とその理論的説明に興味のある受講者を歓迎する。ただし、授業は日本語で行い、また、言語研究の対象言語も、主に英語と日本語から取り出すので、日本語母語話者でない場合でも、日本語と英語は理解できることが望ましい。

You are welcome if you are interested in the structural properties of (various levels of) natural languages. But you should better be able to read, listen to, and understand Japanese, as I will give my lecture in Japanese, and the textbook is also written in Japanese.
