Reading The Tale of Genji in Multiple Languages: Intercultural Co-learning Seminar（Japanese)
国際共修クラスで留学生とともに世界的に有名な日本の古典文学『源氏物語』を読むことを通じて、日本語と日本文化を複眼的に捉えると同時に、複数の言語と文化についての知見を深める。
In an intercultural co-learning class students will gain a multifaceted understanding of Japanese language and culture through reading The Tale of Genji, a world-famous classical literature in Japan, while deepening knowledge of multiple languages and cultures.
・『源氏物語』を複数の言語で読むことで、文学作品のテキストの多様な解釈が可能であることを知り、言語や文化の多様性を理解する。
・『源氏物語』の表現や思想的背景について学び、日本語や日本文化の基盤についての知見を深める。
-Realize that various interpretations are possible in reading literary texts and understand the diversity of languages and cultures in the world by reading The Tale of Genji in multiple languages.
-Learn expressions and thought background of The Tale of Genji and deepen knowledge of the foundation of Japanese language and culture.
・授業内容と方法
テキストとして、『源氏物語』第５番目の巻、若紫巻をとりあげる。日本語の現代語訳のほか、いくつかの外国語訳を読む。外国語訳としては主に英語訳と中国語訳を取り上げる。韓国語訳、ロシア語訳、フランス語訳、イタリア語訳も使用可能である。5〜6人程度のグループに分かれ、担当部分をグループで発表する。1人の学生が学期中に発表する機会は1回になる見込みである。発表担当グループは、担当する部分の要旨を紹介し、外国語訳を日本語に翻訳し、複数の翻訳の違いをふまえて論点を提示する。それをもとに、クラス全体で、あるいはグループで、意見交換を行う。また、毎回授業についての簡単なリフレクション課題に回答して提出する。その内容をクラスで共有し、次の週に発展的学習を行う。

Contents
-Read the “Young Murasaki”chapter of The Tale of Genji, which is the 5th chapter of the work.
-Read some foreign language translations of The Tale of Genji in addition to its modern translation in Japanese.
-Mainly take up English translations and Chinese translations. Korean, Russian, French and Italian translations are available.
-Make presentations about the texts in groups of 5 or 6 people. One student is supposed to make presentation once in the term.
-Each presenter translate a foreign version of the text in charge into Japanese.
-Presenters raise some issues for the group discussion based on the difference of the translations.
-Exchange opinions about the issues in groups.
-After every session write a short reflective report about the class.
-Descriprions of the reports are shared in class for advanced learning at the next week session.

毎回の発表と意見交換で取り上げる日本語のテキストを事前に読んで、内容をきちんと把握しておく。毎回リフレクション課題に回答する。グループのメンバーとともに、発表の準備を行う。期末レポートを書く。
-Students must read and understand the contents of the textbook in Japanese well before class.
-Students must write a reflective report after each session.
-Preparation for group presentation with group members is necessary.
-Final paper assignment is given in the final session of the course.

外国人留学生対象日本語教育プログラムの国際共修科目「GM520」と合同で授業を行う。オンラインでも対面でも履修できる授業とする予定である。使用言語は日本語。非母語話者の場合、N2程度以上の日本語能力を必要とする。学生同士の交流に重点を置く授業であるため、定員を日本人学生・留学生合わせて50名とする。詳細な指示はGoogle Classroomを通じて行う。
A joint class is formed for students of this course and “GM520”, an international co-learning seminar course for international students. This class can be taken either in-person or online. The language used in class is Japanese. Japanese proficiency of international students should be around N2 or higher. Class size is limited to 50 students, because this course requires a focus on the interactive communication among students. Detailed instructions will be provided through Google Classroom.
