Biology B

授業の目的と概要/Object and Summary of Class

Cells are the structural and functional units of living organisms. Understanding basics of cell biology is essential for studying all areas of life sciences and any related branches of natural sciences. The main objective of this course is to learn the essential principles of cell biology by learning how the living cells are made and operated from a molecular perspective: especially, how proteins including transmembrane proteins and enzymes work and how energy is obtained and used in living cells. Moreover, behavior of cells, such as cell migration, cell division and sexual reproduction will be also introduced. This course particularly emphasizes the structure and functions of cells and utilization of biochemical reactions in different biological processes.

学修の到達目標/Goal of Study

Upon finishing this course, students will have a solid grasp of the basic biochemical components and their functions including proteins, membranes and metabolic pathways as well as dynamic cellular natures behind self-replication and maintenance. To accomplish this goal, students need to understand the basic of biochemistry of protein, membrane transport, metabolism, energy generation. In addition, by applying the concept of cell biology as well as biochemistry, students will learn more about living organisms including humans and will have a glimpse of cutting-edge sciences.

Some of the specific learning objectives include:
• Describe the different levels of protein structure and their functions

• Understand membrane and organelle dynamics
• Explain the basic principles of enzyme activity and catalysis

• Understand the fundamental role of central carbon and energy metabolism in
living systems
• Understand recombinant DNA technology
• Understand cellular processes like cell-cycle control and reproduction
• Appreciate the important connectivity among biomolecules and cellular processes

To achieve these objectives, students need to complete weekly reading and problem-set assignments. Quizzes and in-class exercises will be used to promote co-learning and interactions between students. In addition, a final examination will be used to evaluate student learning and ability to extend what they learned. We highly recommend students who have taken ‘Biology A’ to take this course. Together with ‘Biology A’, this course will cover the whole chapters in the textbook (Essential Cell Biology, ECB), and will provide comprehensive knowledge in basic cell biology and biochemistry. Students who did not take ‘Biology A’ are welcome, too.

その他/In Addition

1) This is a general, entry-level biology course, open to all students and compulsory for first-year FGL students in the AMB program. High school-level familiarity with basic organic chemistry and biology is expected, but not necessary. Japanese students and exchange students from any fields are encouraged to enroll, knowing that this is an introductory course held in English.
2) Essential Cell Biology (ECB 4th or 5th Edition) is the main reference textbook.
3) Instructors are young researchers belonging to the Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences (FRIS). They are available for questions and consultation via email or Google Classroom.
