Cognitive Science of Manga Reading
マンガは文字と絵の複合的なメディアである。マンガを読むという行為は、文字認知やイメージ処理、ストーリー理解や感情表現といった、ヒトの認知処理が関与する多くの要素を含んでいる。しかし、マンガの読みの認知特性に関してはまだ研究が十分に蓄積されておらず、探求すべき価値のある多くのテーマが残されている。そこで本授業では、マンガを読むという身近な行為を、認知科学の視点から科学的に探求することを目的とする。（マンガを描いたり、マンガの批評やレビューを行うといった主旨ではないことに留意してほしい。）
Manga is a complex media of text and pictures. The act of reading comics involves many elements of human cognitive processing, such as text recognition, image processing, story comprehension, and emotional expression. However, the cognitive characteristics of comics reading have not been sufficiently studied yet, and there are still many themes worth exploring. In this class, we aim to scientifically explore the familiar act of reading comics from the perspective of cognitive science. (Please note that the purpose of this class is not to draw comics or to critique or review comics.)
マンガを題材とした研究プロジェクトを立案し、グループで共同して調査、実験等に取り組むことを通じて、以下のことを実践的に学習する。
・自分たちで研究テーマを見つけ、それを実験・調査の計画に落とし込んでいくプロセスを体験する
・実証的な手法を用いてデータを解釈し、考察や結論を導き出す
・説得力のあるプレゼンテーションにより成果を発表する
・グループで一つのプロジェクトに取り組むことで、共同学習の面白さ、大変さを経験する
Students will learn the following in a practical manner by planning a research project based on comics and working together as a group to conduct surveys and experiments.
・To experience the process of finding a research theme by themselves and incorporating it into a plan for experiments and surveys.
・Interpret data using empirical methods, and draw considerations and conclusions.
・Present the results in a persuasive presentation.
・Experience the fun and challenges of collaborative learning by working on a project in a group.
本講義では、受講生を数人ずつのグループに分け、各グループで独自の研究テーマを設定してもらい、それに関する実験や調査を実施する。
学期の最後に各グループの成果を発表し、受講者全員でディスカッションする。
初回：オリエンテーション
以降、グループごとに研究テーマの立案と実験や調査の準備を進めていく（詳細は別途説明）。
適宜、全体討論の場を設け、各グループの問題関心を共有するとともに、意見交換する。
最後に発表の場を設け、これまでの成果をプレゼンテーションする。

In this lecture, students will be divided into groups of several people, and each group will be asked to set its own research theme and conduct experiments and surveys on it. From then on, each group will develop a research theme and prepare for experiments and surveys (details to be explained separately). A general discussion will be held at appropriate times to share the concerns of each group and to exchange opinions. Finally, there will be a presentation session to present the results of the project.

出席状況、プロジェクトへの貢献度、期末の発表などを総合的に評価する。
詳細は初回授業時に説明する。
Attendance, contribution to the project, and presentation at the end of the term will be comprehensively evaluated.
Details will be explained in the first class.
授業の最後に、各グループで当日の作業の振り返りを行い、次回授業日までに各メンバーが担当する作業やホームワークの内容を確認する。各メンバーは各々に割り振られた作業を責任をもって遂行してくることが求められる。
At the end of the class, each group will review the work of the day and confirm the work and home work that each member will be responsible for before the next class day. Each member is expected to take responsibility for the work assigned to them.
必須ではないが、情報収集等において各自のパソコンを持ち込んで活用することが望ましい。
Although it is not required, it is desirable to bring your own computer and use it for information gathering.
本授業では、受講生がグループ内で主体的・積極的かつ協力的にプロジェクトに取り組む姿勢が求められる。そのため調査や実験の準備等にとられる時間も多く、授業時間外の活動もある程度必要となるだろう。ただマンガが好きという理由だけで選ぶと、後々後悔することになるかもしれない。
初回：１０月7日（月）川内北キャンパス（教室は後日掲示）。
In this class, students are expected to work independently, actively, and cooperatively in groups on projects. Therefore, there will be a lot of time spent on research and preparation for experiments, and a certain amount of activities outside of class time will be necessary. If you choose this course just because you like manga, you may regret it later on.
The first class will be held at the Kawauchi-Kita campus on Oct 7th (the room number TBA).
