Discovering the little secrets of mastering the fundamentals of scientific English

授業の目的と概要/Object and Summary of Class

The object is to teach students patterns and templates that will help them develop effective skills in presenting technical material in the form of written reports and presentations. Through this course, students will gain a solid grasp of the fundamentals of scientific English, which will improve their ability to discuss and write about science-related topics reported in the news, scientific journals and magazines, and to ultimately gain confidence in disseminating their own research findings.

学習の到達目標/Goal of Study

The goal is for students to use English as a tool to learn to write and edit scientific proposals, blogs, social media posts, to decipher scientific journals and magazines articles, and to report on findings.

Introduction.
1.(a)Fundamentals: Proper style and content; small-group discussions; peer review; collaboration
(b)Methods: Aim to read, write and listen to English every day.

Attendance and participation* during lectures (25%); Reports (65%); Mini-presentations (10%)

教科書および参考書/Textbook and References

Primary reading(s) (students can purchase or borrow a copy from campus library): “Science Research Writing: A Guide for Non-Native Speakers of English” (2009), Hilary Glasman-Deal ISBN-13: 978-1848163102. Secondary readings: Weekly journal articles on current scientific trends and technology will be assigned for self-study and group discussion.

備考/Notes

There is much to learn about scientific topics. Each lecture will start with a discussion of the previous lecture to ensure students have a fundamental grasp of the course content. *Participation includes in-class discussion and peer review.
