Course Title

Global Communication Special Training

授業の目的と概要

Students will develop an extensive range of background knowledge in order to competently promote their research within the wider international community and explain their informed position and points of view. This course uses teaching materials drawn from current affairs media sources of English to explore a large variety of topics. Reading, discussion, written, and presentation practice allows students to incrementally improve verbal, non-verbal, interpersonal, and written communication competencies within social and professional settings.

Over the duration of the course students will develop and become accustomed to using strong communications skills in English necessary for meaningful long-term overseas training for academic research, as well as in professional and social settings. Special attention is given to enhancing discussion and written expression in English.

Lesson 1 – Introductions to course and media topics used throughout.
Lesson 2 – Topic 1 Technology v Regulation: Thematic focus on current affairs text and video material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A.
Lesson 3 – Topic 2 Public Concerns about uses of Technology: Related thematic focus to Topic 1; additional explorations on current affairs text and listening material; pronunciation and enunciation; text comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Group discussion is encouraged at this stage.
Lesson 3 – Topic 3 Climate Change and Social Equality: Thematic focus on current affairs text and video material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Students are encouraged to explore themes and develop active listening and questioning strategies.
Lesson 4 – Topic 4 Policy Failures to tackle Climate Change: Related thematic focus to Topic 3; additional investigations on current affairs text and listening material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Group discussion and presentation is encouraged examining different points of view.
Lesson 5 – Topic 5 Universal Basic Income: Thematic focus on current affairs text and listening material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Students are encouraged to explore themes and develop active listening and questioning strategies. Students begin to explore strategies, such as informative, demonstrative, persuasive, motivational, debate types of speech.
Lesson 6 – Topic 6 Minimum Wage and Implications on Labour: Related thematic focus to Topic 5; additional explorations on current affairs text and listening material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Active participation in group discussion is expected at this stage.
Lesson 7 – Topic 7 GMOs: Thematic focus on current affairs text and video material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Students continue to explore themes and develop active listening and questioning strategies. Students further develop and use a variety of argumentation strategies.
Lesson 8 – Topic 8 Global Food Security Issues: Related thematic focus to Topic 7; additional explorations on current affairs text and listening material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Active participation in group discussion is expected at this stage and students become more comfortable in expressing themselves.
Lesson 9 – Topic 9 Global Mobility: Thematic focus on current affairs text and listening material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Students have become more familiar with understanding different points of view and expressing their own.
Lesson 10 – Topic 10 Immigration Issues: Related thematic focus to Topic 9; Thematic focus on current affairs text and listening material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Students are encouraged to explore themes and develop active listening and questioning strategies. Students employ a variety of speech strategies and identify those of others.
Lesson 11 – Topic 11 AI in Medical Technologies: additional investigations on current affairs text and listening material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Active participation in group discussion is expected at this stage.
Lesson 12 – Topic 12 Gene Editing: Related thematic focus to Topic 11; Thematic focus on current affairs text and listening material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Students are comfortable in recognizing themes and employ active listening and questioning strategies. Students further develop and use a variety of discourse strategies.
Lesson 13 – Topic 13 Creativity and Creative Differences: additional explorations on current affairs text and video material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. At this stage students are comfortable in expressing themselves and begin to employ self-analysis.
Lesson 14 – Topic 14 Social Dilemmas: Related thematic focus to Topic 13; students engage with current affairs text and video material; comprehension, analysis, and Q&A. Students are able to freely express themselves and comfortably use a variety of types of speech.
